The Department of Physical and Chemical Bases of Technology Metals (DPCBTM) – is the youngest at Faculty of Physical Engineering (FPE) NTUU “KPI” − organized in May 1977 (order № 64-1 from 05.21.1977). The initiator of the department’s organization was once Dean of Faculty D. F. Cherneha.

A prominent scientist, metallurgist, Honoured Science Worker of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, was twice a laureate of the State Prize of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor Volodymyr Ivanovych Javoiskyi was born on the 10th of February 1910 in Ustiuzhensk (Novgorodsky province).

Gregoriy Valentinovich Samsonov (15.02.1918, Pushkin, Leningrad Region, Russia - 12.22.1975, Kyiv, buried in the Baikove cemetery) - scientist in chemistry and technology of inorganic materials. He was born in Pushkin city (Leningrad Region).

Preparing engineers, metallurgists in the Kiev Polytechnic Institute started in the early years of the twentieth century. The organizer of the metallurgy specialty and the head of the department for about a quarter of a century was Vasily Petrovich Izhevsky (1863-1926).
