The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, were adopted by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity.

Goal 3 Good health and well-being. Good health and well-being are about ensuring universal access to health services, safe and affordable medicines and vaccines. Supporting scientific research is an integral part of this process.

Goal 4 Quality education

Goal 4 Quality education. Quality education consists of the university's provision of early learning and lifelong learning, the implementation of pedagogical research, and a commitment to inclusive education.

Goal 5 Gender Equality

Gender Equality Goal 5. Gender equality consists of conducting research on the study of gender equality, implementing a gender equality policy within the university, and committing to the recruitment and promotion of women.

Goal 7 Affordable and clean energy

Sustainable Development Goal 7. Affordable and Clean Energy represents the university's energy-related research, energy use and policy, and its commitment to promoting energy efficiency in the broader community.

Goal 8 Decent work and economic growth

Sustainable Development Goal 8. Decent work and economic growth show the university's economic research, internships, employment and the proportion of students who complete internships.

Goal 9 Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Sustainable Development Goal 9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure shows the university's research in industry and innovation, the number of their patents and spin-off companies, and research revenues to industry.

Goal 10 Reduce inequality within

Sustainable Development Goal 10. Reducing Inequality measures the university’s research into social inequality, policies on discrimination, and commitment to recruiting staff and students from underrepresented groups.

Goal 11 Sustainable cities and communities

Sustainable Development Goal 11. Resilient Cities and Communities highlights the university's research on sustainability, its role as custodians of arts and heritage, and its internal approaches to sustainability.

Goal 14 Life below water

Sustainable Development Goal 14. Conserving Marine Resources guides the university's research into life underwater, as well as education and support for aquatic ecosystems.

Sustainable Development Goal 15. Protect and restore terrestrial ecosystems measures the university's research on life on land and education and support for terrestrial ecosystems.

Goal 16 Peace, justice and strong institutions

Sustainable Development Goal 16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions measures the university's research on peace and justice, engagement as advisors to government, and policies on academic freedom.

Goal 17 Partnerships for the goals

Sustainable Development Goal 17. The Partnership for Sustainable Development identifies broader ways in which the university supports the SDGs through collaboration with other countries, promotion of best practices, and publication of data.
