One of the traditions, the origins of which are associated with the activities of an outstanding scientist, innovator, welder, materials scientist academician E.O. Paton, whose name is the Educational and Research Institute of Materials Science and Welding of KPI, is the inseparable unity of KPI scientists with scientists of the Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine of physical and material science profile. In this cooperation, KPI is represented by the E.O. Paton Institute of IMZ - a large educational, scientific and innovative complex in the structure of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, which includes 5 departments.
On their basis, there are scientific schools “Materials Science of Refractory Compounds and Composites” (scientific adviser - Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine P.I. Loboda), “Physics and Technology of Metal Nanomaterials” (scientific adviser - Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine S.I. Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine S.I. Sydorenko), “Physicochemical and thermo-deformation bases of welding and related processes” (supervisor - Prof. V.V. Kvasnytskyi), “Foundry technologies” (supervisor - Prof. M.M. Yamshynskyi), “Processes and equipment for physical and technical processing of materials by highly concentrated energy sources” (supervisor - Doctor of Technical Sciences M.I. Anyakin). These schools employ more than 30 doctors and more than 50 candidates of sciences, perform significant amounts of state budget, grant and economic contractual topics (in total in 2024 ~ UAH 17.5 million). About 100 scientific articles are published annually. Most of them are published in journals indexed by the Scopus and Web of Science databases.

A significant amount of research that ensures such high results is jointly conducted by creative teams of scientists from the E.O. Paton Institute of IMZ and research institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine in the areas of metallurgy, materials science and welding. Educational activities are also an important component: joint training of postgraduate and undergraduate students, teaching of disciplines devoted to the materials of the future.
In order to expand the possibilities of such cooperation, to involve as many university staff, students, and postgraduates as possible, in October 2023, the organization of lectures by leading scientists of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was resumed at the E.O. Paton Institute of IMZ. Thus, polytechnics have already had the opportunity to listen to lectures by Deputy Director of the Franzevich Institute for Problems of Materials Science of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine O.B. Zgalat-Lozynskyi “Modern trends in materials science: additive manufacturing and electric sintering technologies”; Head of the Department of Plastic Welding of the E.O. Paton Institute of Electric Welding of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine M.V. Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine M.V. Yurzhenko “Fundamentals of plastic welding and modern trends in the industry”; Deputy Director of the Kurdyumov Institute of Metallophysics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ph. D., G.S. Firstov “Functional materials with shape memory: development, research, prospects”; Head of the Department of Mathematical Methods of Research of Physical and Chemical Processes in Welding and Special Electrometallurgy of the E.O. Paton Institute of Electric Welding of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Ph. Makhnenko “Mathematical modeling in welding and related processes”; Head of the Laboratory of Nanostructured Materials of the Institute of Materials Science Problems named after I.M. Frantzevych of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Corresponding Member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine M.P. Gadzyra “Research - Technology - Production”, which aroused great interest among the student community and scientific and pedagogical staff of the E.O. Paton Institute of IMZ. This was evidenced by a significant number of questions to the speakers and a lively discussion of what they heard. Moreover, after these meetings, the students expressed a desire to do internships in the relevant scientific departments of the Institutes of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

We believe that holding academic readings at the E.O. Paton Institute of IMZ is a very important tradition for the Institute. Therefore, we will continue to promote the development of cooperation between metallurgists, materials scientists, specialists in processing and joining materials of our university and the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and will strengthen joint educational activities based on the latest scientific achievements and future technological breakthroughs.
