Viktor Lvovich Kirpichov was born on September 26 (October 8), 1845, at the Bardino estate in Pskov Oblast (Russia) to Lieutenant Colonel Lev Matveyeich Kirpichov, a Mathematics teacher at the Mykolaiv Military Engineering School (St. Petersburg).

Establishing of Mechanical Scientific School is directly connected with the creation in Kiev Polytechnic the Department of strength of materials.
