Let’s get acquainted: Andrii Shendrik is a fourth-year student of the faculty of Chemical Technology of National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. He studies the chemical synthesis of cosmetics and food additives at the Physical Chemistry department. “Our department took students to study for this specialization for the first time in 2013, - tells Andrii. - Modern food manufacturing industry is based on the widespread use of various food additives that adjust the taste of the food, enhance its appearance, form its texture, extend its storage life. Food additives are natural or artificial substances, for instance, flavours, colourings, emulsifiers, stabilizers, thickeners, рreservatives, аntioxidants etc. The compulsory components of different cosmetic products are bioactive substances that are widely used in cosmetic industry. Specialists in such chemical technologies are highly in demand.” This young person is successfully studying and is engaged in scientific work under the direction of associate professor Mykola Yevhenovych Ponomarov. He has already published some works in scientific collections of conferences.
Ponomarov annually prepares the prizewinners of the chemistry university olympiad to the All-Ukrainian stage and Andrii Shendrik turned up among them this year. The second stage was held May 16-18 on the basis of National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine. The student recalls a good organization and fair judging. And then he adds with a smile: one of the main tasks was to understand the essence of the question and what the jury would like to see in the answer and I have coped with it. And the diploma of the 1st degree confirms his success.
When asked about plans for the future, the young man responded after a minute of reflection: “After completing my studies, I, like the rest of my groupmates, will stand at the crossroads of several ways, the main ones among them are: work at industrial enterprises (cosmetology, pharmaceutical and food), scientific activity (in Kyiv there are several research institutes and laboratories of chemical direction), teaching activity, quality control of products on the market, as well as not specialized work in the service business. I haven’t decided what way to take but industry takes the first place.”
May all the dreams come true!
