As is known, the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is probably the only technical university in Ukraine, whose mission explicitly specifies a focus on sustainable development goals. This is clearly indicated in the university's mission statement:

Kyiv Polytechnic’s mission: To develop the scientific, educational and innovative potential of the University for the purpose of achieving the goals of sustainable development of society, high-tech transformation of the country and strengthening its defence capability, formation of high-quality human capital for the restoration and sustainable development of Ukraine, providing a basis for the development of socially responsible specialists poised to solve global problems and change the world. This highlights that sustainable development at the University is not an abstract declaration, but an integral part of its strategic goals. The Kyiv Polytechnic recognises the importance of training specialists who are aware of the challenges of the present day, particularly the problems of environmental, economic and social sustainability, and are able to respond effectively to them in their professional activities.

In this context, one of the key indicators of the effectiveness of integrating the principles of sustainable development into the educational process is the level of awareness among students and teaching staff of this concept. The university has a specialised website dedicated to the study of various aspects of sustainable development 🔗, and another link is related to relevant subjects 🔗.

After all, the practical implementation of sustainable development ideas both within the university community and in the future professional activities of graduates depends on the depth of their knowledge, values and willingness to act.

In order to monitor this awareness, Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute annually undertakes an online survey among students and teaching staff. It is conducted by the specialists of the SocioPlus Educational and Research Centre for Applied Sociology, and participation in it is open to all university community.

According to the findings of a survey conducted in the academic year 2024-2025, it is established that 86.6% of Kyiv Polytechnic students are aware of the concept of society’s sustainable development. This indicator testifies to the great interest of young people in sustainable development issues as well as to the effectiveness of information, training and educational work at the university.

In addition, the results of this survey may well serve as a basis for further analysis and improvement of educational programmes, and for internal communication in terms of sustainable development goals. Specifically, they enable the identification of those aspects in which it is necessary to strengthen the work on raising the awareness and practical application of sustainable development principles among students and teaching staff.

Therefore, systematic work to raise the awareness of sustainable development goals among the university community is not only a constituent of Kyiv Polytechnic's image as an advanced higher education institution, but also a concrete contribution to achieving global and national sustainable development goals.
