On April 24, as part of the International Youth Symposium on the History of Science and Technology "Priorities of Ukrainian Science" on the basis of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the annual XXIII International Scientific and Practical Conference "History of the Development of Science, Technology and Education" on the topic "Fundamental Sciences as a Driver of Technological Transformations" was held online.
The organizers of the event were the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of KPI, the Scientific and Technical Library named after G.I. Denysenko, the State Polytechnic Museum named after Boris Paton, the Council of Young Scientists of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, the State Institution "Institute for Research of Scientific and Technical Potential and History of Science (SI IDNTPIN) named after G.M. Dobrov of the NAS of Ukraine", and the Trade Union Committee of KPI.

The conference discussed key issues related to fundamental scientific research and modern technologies in Ukraine and around the world. Particular attention was paid to the role of fundamental sciences as a driver of technological transformations, their impact on the development of engineering and technologies, as well as the importance of integrating physical sciences to overcome global challenges. Scientific and scientific-technical schools, the influence of individuals on the development of science, the evolution of fundamental ideas and theories, as well as the role of physics in the modern technological world were considered.
The conference became a platform for discussing the development of education in Ukraine and the world, the importance of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute for the development of national technical education, and the contribution of Ukrainian scientists to global scientific and technological progress. All these issues are fundamental for shaping the scientific worldview of young researchers and increasing their interest in physics, mathematics, and engineering disciplines.
More than 100 participants registered to participate in this year's conference, including not only students, postgraduates, young scientists, teachers and researchers of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, but also representatives of the national technical universities of Kharkiv, Odessa, Cherkasy, Lutsk, Kherson State Maritime Academy, O.O. Bogomolets National Medical University, the Institute for Research of Scientific and Technical Potential and History of Science named after G.M. Dobrov of the NAS of Ukraine, Institute of Physics of the NAS of Ukraine, Military Institute of Telecommunications and Informatization, National Scientific Agricultural Library.
The chairman of the conference organizing committee, Dean of the FMF, Professor Vitaliy Kotovskyi, congratulated the participants and wished them fruitful work. He emphasized that the event allows many students to engage in scientific work, gain experience in scientific communication, and subsequently find themselves in the creation of innovative technologies.
Addressing the conference participants, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Vadym Loktev noted that ignorance or disregard for the power of science and its role in progressive changes in the security of humanity creates an additional danger for our state, and those who do not know history, in particular the history of science, risk not being able to take their rightful place in the locomotive of civilizational development.
Head of the Department of General Physics of the FMF, Professor Serhii Reshetnyak, welcoming the participants and guests of the conference, emphasized the exceptional importance of fundamental sciences as a driver of technological transformations and noted that the department is actively working on the development of an international project, within which special attention will be paid to the integration of new technologies, in particular artificial intelligence, in physical research.
Head of the Department of History and Sociology of Science and Technology at the G.M. Dobrov Institute of History, Science and Technology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Doctor of Historical Sciences Alla Litvinko emphasized that the Youth Scientific and Practical Conference, together with the All-Ukrainian Conference of Young Scientists-Historians of Science, Technology and Education, and Specialists, are included in the Youth Symposium on the History of Science and Technology with interrelated topics aimed at raising awareness of the scientific picture of the world and the contemporary significance of science as an important sphere of social life at the national and global levels.
Vadym Shenderovsky, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, leading researcher at the Institute of Physics of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, welcomed the conference participants and emphasized the particular need for high-quality technical education at the present time. He emphasized that Ukrainian scientists have always worked and continue to work at the forefront of physical science, and therefore it is necessary to thoroughly study their scientific heritage.
Almost 90 reports were sent to the conference organizing committee, 45 of which covered a wide range of scientific and educational achievements and were included in the conference proceedings. The conference program was traditionally divided into three parts. The first part looked at the role of the individual in science; the phenomenon of scientific and scientific-technical schools; and pages from the history of natural and technical sciences in Ukraine and the world. The second part focused on physics and the modern high-tech world. The third part dealt with the development of education in Ukraine and the world, and the methodology of teaching physics and mathematics. The program included 44 reports, 20 of which were presented.
The most interesting reports were awarded certificates. Among them were: “Professor Viktor Kirpichov: contribution to the development of higher technical education” (author D.M. Kostenko), “Oleksandr Borysovych Baibakov – outstanding Ukrainian designer and shipbuilder” (R.I. Muratov, A.M. Tsupa, and E.B. Lukyanenko). “The Current State of the Thermal Imaging Device Market” (P.A. Tsutevich, V.Y. Kotovskyi), “Quantum Phenomena at Ultra-Low Temperatures” (B.O. Zhuravel, M. S. Strokach), “The evolution of theoretical concepts of superconductivity” (D. Yu. Grudin, V. F. Rusakov), “The world's first piezoelectric motor: the contribution of KPI scientists to the development of high-precision devices” (T.I. Ozozhenko), “The role of physics in sniper skills” (M.M. Zolota, O.V. Dimarova).
Summarizing the results of the conference, Professor Serhii Reshetnyak emphasized that such youth forums help to attract young people's attention to science, which, in turn, determines the basis for the perception of the scientific picture of the world.
The International Youth Scientific and Practical Conference “History of the Development of Science, Technology, and Education” has become a traditional meeting place for young researchers and experienced specialists. Such events stimulate the involvement of young people in science, the formation of research skills and a scientific worldview.
