Nowadays distance learning that is the provision of educational services using modern information and communication technologies in order to deliver educational material and communicate directly with students is the topic of heated discussions. It is not easy to switch to a new format of work for both teachers and students. Therefore, the exchange of experience and practices is extremely useful.

About the features of education during the quarantine period we talk with Serhiy Yakovlev, the associate professor of the Department of Mathematical Methods of Information Security of Institute of Physics and Technology.

– Serhiy Volodymyrovych you have been posting your video lectures for free for many years. Your colleagues follow your example. But how was the educational process organized in the pre-quarantine period, and how does this practice contribute to conducting classes now?

– In the pre-quarantine period, the educational process was organized in a traditional classroom way with a “blackboard and chalk”, since I mainly teach mathematical disciplines and disciplines in cryptology, which are also very connected with mathematics. In such disciplines there is a very great variability in the presentation of the material: one better understands, another one needs more examples. For one the basic school knowledge is enough, and for someone else, books are needed to make thorough study. Also one perceives everything by ear while another needs written manual. In such a situation, classical classroom teaching allows me to adapt to my students and explain the material as best as I can.

Now, videos of lectures that I have made to help prepare for the exams of the "modern generation of YouTube" are very useful. So during distance learning students master the theoretical material from video recordings and instead of giving lectures, I arrange the consultations on which I explain obscure points individually. My colleagues, whose lectures I have managed to record, do the same.
