“Synergy of Science and Practice” is the motto of the Institute of Civil Protection Research of the National University of Civil Protection of Ukraine (INDCZ of the NUCZ of Ukraine), with which Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute signed a memorandum of scientific cooperation on March 5. The document was signed by Vice-Rector for Scientific Work Professor Serhii Stirenko on behalf of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, and by its acting head Professor Roman Ponomarenko on behalf of the SICC of Ukraine(INDCZ of the NUCZ of Ukraine.

The Institute of Civil Protection Research of the National University of Civil Protection of Ukraine is a geographically separate structural subdivision of the university with separate rights of a legal entity. The purpose of its activities is to conduct scientific, technical and research activities in the field of civil protection, fire and industrial safety for the SES. This is a very young structure - it was created in November last year on the basis of the reorganized Institute of Public Administration and Civil Protection Research by merging with the National University of Civil Protection of Ukraine.

The signing of the memorandum was preceded by a discussion of possible areas of cooperation in research and development of new equipment for the relevant purpose, joint participation in innovative projects, primarily in the field of humanitarian demining and some others. In addition, during the conversation, the participants of the meeting, including the Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Tetiana Zheliaskova, also raised the issue of organizing student internships at the INDCZ of the NUCZ of Ukraine and launching internal mobility projects for students of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and the National University of Civil Defense of Ukraine - the INDCZ as a subdivision of this university can become a good bridge for organizing and maintaining educational contacts between the two universities.

"Given the strategic directions of the Institute's activities, one of the most promising areas for cooperation is the provision of mine action and demining units. The SES has a Department of Mine Action, which searches for dangerous objects underground, underwater and on the surface, including using UAVs. Therefore, we will focus more on this area, as it is currently the number one problem for our country,“ Roman Ponomarenko commented on the results of the conversation. ”However, of course, our activities are broader: civil security, fire safety, industrial safety, emergency response, providing units with material and technical means, such as fire equipment, firefighting equipment, etc. These are also strength tests, stability tests, flame spread tests, research using special equipment with verified methods, and so on. And there can be effective cooperation in these areas as well, of course."

Serhii Stirenko told about other ways cooperation with the SICC could be interesting for Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute: "During our meeting, we said, among other things, that the synergy between our universities can be quite powerful due to the fact that they have technical means and devices that we do not have, and vice versa - we have laboratories and centers for the collective use of scientific equipment that they do not have. In addition, they have a test site equipped with special devices, where we can test our developments with telemetry data collection. We are also planning to apply for grant projects together. In my opinion, such civil-military cooperation will be effective."

The distribution of responsibilities within the framework of participation in joint research, programs, developments, and in the preparation of certain international projects may, if necessary, be determined by separate agreements in specific areas - this is provided for in the memorandum. And, of course, the parties to the memorandum plan to jointly organize and conduct various scientific events (seminars, trainings, workshops, etc.) to promote scientific and innovative activities in the relevant areas.

"Our country is going through a time when everyone should join forces to counter the threats we face," said Serhiy Ogurtsov, Deputy Head of the SICC for Scientific Work, "Accordingly, such a powerful higher education institution as Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute can help us with scientific support in developing tactics for the use, maintenance, and modernization of complexes that we receive in large quantities as part of humanitarian and other aid.

Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute has a new partner in the field of science: The Institute of Civil Defense Research of the National University of Civil Defense of Ukraine (“INCDCZ NUCZU”).

The main focus of future cooperation is on innovation, development and implementation of new projects, research, educational programs, and important initiatives:

📌 grant programs (submission of joint applications for funding in Ukraine and abroad)

internal mobility (exchange of students and specialists within joint educational programs, in particular in chemical and environmental technologies)

📌 exchange of equipment between the centers of collective use of institutions (for example, the fire test site of the INCDCZ of the NUCSU is a base of modern laboratories that will be extremely useful for our students);

📌 internships and practice for representatives of Kyiv Polytechnic and the INCDCZ NUCZU.
