For many years, the sections “Materials and Additive Technologies” and “Applied Mechanics and Mechanical Engineering”, which are part of the Department of Engineering and Materials Science of the Kyiv Academy of Sciences, have been actively working at the E.O. Paton Educational and Research Institute of Materials Science and Welding of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
The sections are headed by experienced researchers Professor Anatolii Minitskyi and Associate Professor Mykhailo Bloshchytsyn. They are responsible for training talented students from various educational institutions of Kyiv.
💥
Each section consists of up to 30 students who have the opportunity to conduct their research and get acquainted with new achievements in the field of materials science and mechanical engineering at the E.O. Paton Institute of Mechanical Engineering. During the work of the sections, their participants have repeatedly won various competitions: III stage of the All-Ukrainian competition of students' works of the Junior Academy of Sciences, “The Future of Ukraine”, “InvertorUA”, as well as international competitions “INOVA”, “INTARG”, “GENIUS OLIMPIAD”, etc.
Of course, the section also hosts various events that promote students' interest and encourage them to work on their research. By the way, the work does not stop during the holidays. Thus, in accordance with the work plan of the Kyiv Small Academy of Sciences for Pupils for the academic year 2023-2024, in order to popularize technical sciences among the student youth of Kyiv and actively involve students in research work, in June 2024, the Summer Scientific and Professional School of the Department of Engineering and Materials Science of the Kyiv MAS (in a mixed format) worked on the basis of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. 134 students were registered for training. According to the program, practical classes were held on the basis of educational and scientific laboratories of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in the areas of work of the sections of the Department of Engineering and Materials Science, headed by Stanislava Ihnatova. In addition, at all practical classes, the students got acquainted with the scientific developments of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
In particular, the Department of Physical Materials Science and Heat Treatment held a master class on obtaining thin films and coatings and determining their thickness using an interferometer. Students were able to see the process of magnetron sputtering and measure the thickness of a thin metal film deposited on a silicon substrate. They also got acquainted with the modern laboratories of Rigaku X-ray analysis and mass spectrometry, optical and electron microscopy of the Center for Collective Use of Scientific Equipment “Materials Science of Refractory Compounds and Composites” of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
The summer school was attended by teachers of various faculties and institutes of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and heads of other sections: Oleh Kozlenko, Liudmyla Bulygina, Tetiana Soloviova, Vitalii Pobihailo, Serhii Strutynskyi, Dmytro Dzhulii, Dmytro Krasnovyd, Oleksandr Plivak, Olha Musienko, Viktor Tymoshenko, Oleksii Ishchenko, Viktor Koval, Volodymyr Turyk, Oleksandr Haletskyi, Ivan Lukianenko, Olha Holiavik, Anton Lavrinenkov, Oleksii Kagliak, Anton Kotsiubailo, Yurii Pepa, Oleksandr Okhrymenko.
Also, the teachers of the E.O. Paton Educational and Research Institute of Materials Science and Welding actively cooperate with the National Center “Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine” and the Kyiv Region Academy of Sciences. At the end of September, Associate Professor of the Department of High-Temperature Materials and Powder Metallurgy Tetiana Soloviova and Assistant Professor Serhii Teslia worked as members of the jury to select projects of the Kyiv Junior Academy of Sciences and scientific works of the Kyiv Regional Junior Academy of Sciences for the second stage of the InventorUA youth science and technology project competition.
In October, a new series of lectures was launched for students in grades 8-11: “The Amazing World of Materials and Technologies. During the lecture course, students will learn about the creation and use of new materials and technologies, hear about the secrets of creating new metals, biomaterials, composites, and their practical use. Therefore, on October 8, at the guidance session of the Junior Academy of Sciences, Tetiana Soloviova gave a lecture for high school students of Kyiv region on “Forms of organization and mechanisms for managing students' research activities in integration with scientific institutions,” revealing important aspects of how the combination of school and science efforts opens up new opportunities for beginning researchers. Particular attention was paid to materials science, a key field that is the basis for future innovations. “We sincerely believe that this knowledge will help students decide on their career choice, which is an extremely important step towards their successful future,” the mentors said.
“We are proud of our teachers, who help young scientists to approach new discoveries and achievements step by step. Professional support for young people is extremely important for the development of innovations and the future of science in Ukraine,” Professor Igor Vladimirsky, Director of the E.O. Paton Institute of IMZ, noted the work of his colleagues.
