Students from Kyiv, Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Kryvyi Rih, Kremenchuk, Sumy, Ternopil, Kharkiv, Khmelnytskyi, Vasyl' Stus Donetsk National University, which is temporarily located in Vinnytsia, took part in the finals of the first All-Ukrainian competition of student research papers on artificial intelligence (AI), which ended at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute on November 29. They presented their own developments in several areas: "Computer vision", "Data analysis", "Natural language processing", "Computational intelligence", "Speech recognition".
The competition was held in two rounds. According to the results of the first, held in educational institutions in September-October 2023, 57 works were selected. 20 works reached the the finals.
The final part of the competition was the final scientific and practical conference held at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. During three sessions on the first day of the conference, the authors presented their works in the FIOT hub directly and online. These presentations once again showed: AI as a branch of computer linguistics and informatics is developing intensively and is already capable of developing advanced intelligent methods in a wide variety of fields - industry, medicine, commerce, mathematics, sociology, even sports, etc. - and has a great future. Therefore, according to the members of the authoritative jury, many of the authors of the submitted works have interesting prospects.
In his address to the participants, the chairman of the competition committee, rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Mykhailo Zgurovsky, noted that the All-Ukrainian competition of scientific works on artificial intelligence was held thanks to the desire of students and their supervisors to join the development of artificial intelligence in the future digital society. After all, it is talented young people who will improve the high-tech business in our country and further develop scientific schools in the field of creating systems that imitate such processes as speech, thinking, and emotion. According to Zgurovsky, the most important thing to remember today is that AI can acquire the ability to perceive the world around it, including in the military sphere, so that the latest technologies will help to increase the defense capabilities of our country's Armed Forces in order to defeat the Russian aggressor.
What will further develop the study of AI technologies in all Ukrainian universities? First of all, it is the All-Ukrainian competition of student research papers on artificial intelligence. And, as Mykhailo Zgurovsky said, an appeal is being prepared to Ukrainian universities with a proposal to hold it on the basis of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
A number of useful seminars were held at the conference: the inaugural seminar of the Sikorsky Challenge Startup School, conducted by Oleksii Strutsynskyi, Director of the Sikorsky Challenge Innovation Holding; a seminar by Data Art on Artificial Intelligence in Modern IT Projects (speaker - AI consultant Vladyslav Bezsmertnyi); a seminar "AI: Will It Replace Developers" by Sigma Software (head of training programs in Kyiv and the central region Volodymyr Yantsov); seminar "Development of navigation systems for UAVs" held by Professor of the Department of Computer Science at FIOT Serhii Stirenko, and others.
... The winners of the competition were awarded at the final session of the scientific and practical conference.
The first place and the prize from the sponsors was won by the student of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Andrii Sheruda (supervisor - postgraduate student of the Department of Artificial Intelligence of the Institute of Information Systems and Software Engineering Kyrylo Ryazanovskyi). The topic of his work is "Intelligent system for diagnosing infective endocarditis based on the results of cardiac echocardiography processing".
The second place was shared by two participants: Iryna Derevyanko, a student of the Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (development of the "Decision Support System for Diagnosis Using MRI Images", online presentation) and Yaroslav Gladkyi, a student of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute ("Hybrid system for classifying types of lung lesions in COVID-19 based on a neural network and self-organized forest", supervisor - Assistant Professor of the Department of Biometric Cybernetics Oleksandr Matviychuk, FBMI).
The third place went to Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute students Yevhen Saliy and Volodymyr Kuzin for the development of "Intelligent methods of feature engineering for the task of semantic segmentation of forest conditions using satellite data" (supervisor - Associate Professor of the Department of Mathematical Modeling and Data Analysis of the Institute of FTI Alla Lavreniuk) and to a student of NTU "Kharkiv Polytechnic Institute" Kyrylo Perevoznyk for the development of "Application of neural network technologies for the analysis of public opinion" (supervisor - Professor of the Department of System Analysis and analytical systems of the Institute of Computer Science and Information Technology Yurii Parzhyn). Anastasia Neskorodieva, a student of Vasyl' Stus Donetsk National University, is also among the bronze medalists. Her development "Neural Network Identification of the Pose of an Athlete Performing Rhythmic Gymnastics Exercises" (online presentation) was made under the scientific supervision of Serhii Shtovba, Professor of the Department of Information Technology, Faculty of Information and Applied Technologies, DNU.
There were also incentive prizes from sponsors.
Congratulating the winners of the competition, Mykhailo Zgurovsky offered to publish the winners' articles and reports in the International Scientific and Technical Journal "System Research and Information Technologies". Each of the winners was also invited to participate in the Sikorsky Challenge 2024 Festival of Innovative Projects.
