Ninety-five teams representing the universities of eight countries have signed up for the Thirteenth International Student Olympiad in Programming named after S.O. Lebedev and V.M. Glushkov “KPI-OPEN 2018”, which started on July, 3, at the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kiev Polytechnic Institute”.

Igor Sikorsky KPI will host both rounds of the Olympiad. During this three-day digital marathon the best young programmers from several countries will be competing for the 13th time for the “Crystal Tower”, the main prize in this international programming tournament.

The organizer of the Olympiad was the Igor Sikorsky KPI with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the Cybernetic Center of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.

Participants of the Olympiad “KPI-OPEN 2018” were congratulated by the Vice Rector for Educational Work of Igor Sikorsky KPI Petro Kyrychok, Deputy Director of the Institute of Cybernetics named after V.M. Glushkov of the NAS of Ukraine, corresponding member of NASU Oleksandr Khimich, director of educational programs of EPAM Systems in Ukraine Maxim Pocheubut and deputy chairman of the Olympiad jury, deputy director of the Space Research Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, professor of the department Information Security of the Physical-Technical Institute of the Igor Sikorsky KPI Natalia Kussul.

As with any other programming tournament, the main objective of the Olympiad is to identify the strongest among its members. Given the fact that students are starting out, it is equally important to teach them how to work in a team and to help them evaluate their own strengths and understand the direction in which to move further in their learning. Well, of course, one of the objectives of the Olympiad is to ensure the development of inter-university relations.

Traditionally, the organizers of the Olympiad offer participants not only puzzling and, at the same time, extremely interesting tasks (in the first round they will be six, in the second - eight), but also various activities within the framework of its cultural program: excursions to the KPI and Kyiv, visiting of the State Polytechnic Museum of the KPI, football tournament, etc.

It is not surprising that over the years this Olympiad has become one of the main events of the calendar for students who are studying programming at Ukrainian and Eastern European universities. But not only for them, but also for many IT companies there is a great opportunity to find promising employees among those interested in the future profession of students. Therefore, the popularity of “KPI-OPEN” is constantly growing as evidenced by the expansion of geography and the number of participants in the Olympiad. The total statistics for the years of its conduct is as follows: teams, 3500 students from 15 countries and 165 universities participated in the “KPI-OPEN”. This year, representatives of Estonia, China, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, Romania, Hungary and, of course, Ukraine, came to its launch.

The sponsors of the Olympiad in 2018 were a number of well-known companies such as Netrracker Technology, Training Center, AS AmazonSellers.pro, «Nature Technologies», Credit Agricole Bank, Alfa-Bank, Advertising and Printing Enterprise «COPY-CENTER».

The ceremony for awarding the winners of the Olympiad and its closing will take place on July, 7.

For reference: KPI-OPEN is one of the world's largest programming competitions. The Olympiad is conducted according to the original rules, harmonized with international ones. Together with the absence of an organizational fee, this makes it an ideal platform for meeting young programmers from Ukraine and other countries.
