The traffic artery(from which the main academic building was photographed) has been known as Zhytomyr and Brest-Litovsk highway since the first half of XIX century. From the end of XIX century, since the beginning of its development, its name was Brest-Litovsk highway, in 1964-1985 – Brest-Litovsk avenue, from May 6 1985 – Peremohy avenue. It is one of the most important traffic arteries of Kyiv, stretching from Peremohy Square to the Big Circular Road(“Belt Road”). It took its historical name from a town called Brest(Brest-Litovsk), to which the highway leads(now Zhytomyrr highway). It connected the city with a suburban area(on the left side – private farmsteads Strelna, on the right side – Nyvky). In 1857, a triumphal arch was built on brest-Litovsk highway(eventually, it was dismantled). The development of Brest-Litovks highway(a part of the former Shuliavka) began at the end of XIX century owing to the construction of Polytechnic institute(№37) and Grether and Kryvanek’s works(now “Bilshovyk”).
In 1908, a Zoological park was founded on Brest-Litovsk highway(№32), in 1899 – Pushkin park(№40). There was a racecourse near the park , called Racing field. Here in April 1910 S.I. Utochkin made his first flights. In the May of the same year O.S. Kudashev had his first flight in Russia on the plane of his own design which was produced domestically. In 1927-1928, the racecourse was replaced by the premises of the studio of Feature films(№44). Along Brest-Litovsk avenue Svyatoshin airfield was situated. In 1913, it was a starting point for the long plane flights of P.M.Nesterov, here he made an aerobatic maneuver called “loop-the-loop”.
Along the prospect, the following structures and facilities are situated: “Nivki” park(№82-84), subway stations “Politekhnichnyi Instytut”, “Shuliavska”, “Beresteiska”, “Nyvky”, “Sviatoshyn”, “Zhytomyrska”, a monument to the students, teachers and worker of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, a monument to Soviet tankmen, commemorative plaques to: O.O. Dovzhenko, I.A. Savchenko(both №44), V.I. and A.I. Khokhlov(№43), F.F.Zhmachenko(№52/2), to E.O. Paton. S.P. Korolev, V.F.Bobrov, to the first Kyiv Soviet of Workers Deputies, to the headquarters of Red Guard(№37).
The avenue is crossed by 3 overpasses – Povitroflotsky(1958; engineers E.N.Stepanov and G.A.Horobets, architect A.V.Ilyashenko and others), at the intersection with Dovzhenka street(1960; engineers E.N. Stepanov and I.M. Kanivsky, architect A.V.Ilyashenko and others) and at the intersection with Dehtyarivska street. In1981-1984, the avenue was reconstructed(widened to 30 m, traffic interchanges and pedestrian underpasses were constructed; chief project engineer B.S.Romanenko).
