The Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute cares not only for knowledge but also for the environment. Each year, its library, in cooperation with university's subdivisions, takes up a scheduled collection of waste paper – printed matter that has lost its relevance, being of no possible value, or physically worn-out.
The first phase of this year’s campaign got off to a good start in May: 6,589 kilograms of waste paper were collected from the library and five structural subdivisions of the University. The collected recyclable materials were then transferred to Vtorresursy No. 3 LLC for processing, under the current contract. The proceeds from the sale go to the Kyiv Polytechnic’s special fund, earmarked for the needs of the educational process and the development of infrastructure.
The entire collection process is carried out in accordance with legislation, including:
- Law of Ukraine On Libraries and Librarianship;
- Cabinet of Ministers’ Resolution No. 1314, dated 8 November 2007, On Approval of Procedure for Writing Off State Property Objects;
- Orders of the Ministry of Education and Science and the Ministry of Culture in terms of accounting and write-off of textbooks and library holdings.
The printed matter subject to write-off is physically worn-out, outdated in content, or has exceeded the designated shelf life.
This initiative directly contributes to the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals:
- SDG 4: Quality education – updating library collections ensures access to relevant and quality knowledge;
- SDG 12: Responsible consumption and production – reuse of resources and reduction of waste;
- SDG 13: Climate action – by reducing waste and conserving natural resources;
- SDG 15: Life on land – by protecting, restoring and promoting sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably managing forests.
Not only does this initiative help to maintain the proper condition of library's holdings and space, but it also promotes ecological awareness, the culture of waste sorting and economical use of resources among Kyiv Polytechnic students and staff.
Thanks are due to all subdivisions that joined the collection. Through united effort, they make the educational environment modern, eco-friendly and sustainable.
