It was created in 1997 by the joint efforts of scientists and teachers of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and NTUU "KPI" (Order No. 1-90 dated July 18, 1997.
In the period from 1997 to 2002, the department was headed by a well-known materials scientist, the first vice-president of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Anatoly Petrovych Shpak.
From September 1, 2021, the head of the department is the Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Associate Professor Gennady Yevgenovich Monastyrskyi.
The main task of the department is the training of specialists in the specialty 105 Applied physics and nanomaterials (specializations "Advanced physical technologies" and "Physics of living systems" by order of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, other scientific educational institutions of Ukraine. The department provides fundamental and professionally oriented training in physics, other specialties of FTI.
The education provided by the department is based on the principles of the physical and technical system of education. Students receive thorough training in fundamental disciplines - physics, mathematics at the level of the relevant specialties of classical universities, as well as an increased level of training in foreign languages, information technologies, and others.
The teachers of the department developed and delivered about 30 modern professional-oriented and special disciplines, among them "Physics of solid media", "Electrodynamics of solid media", "Statistical radiophysics and optics", "Physics of plasma", "Physics of a solid body", "Mathematical modeling of physical processes and applied programs", "Symmetry in physics", "X-ray methods of research", "Methods of research of the properties of substances", "Quantum electronics", "Optoelectronics", "Fundamentals of general biology and biochemistry", "Fundamentals of biophysics", "Biophysics complex systems",
"Synergetics", "Nonlinear optics", "Technology and application of nanostructures", "Quantum chemistry", "Physics and surface chemistry", "New materials and substances", "Physical kinetics", "Infrared electronics", "Local research methods" , "Physical materials science", "Physics of disordered systems", "integral and fiber optics".
The implemented "physical engineering" education system made it possible to create close cooperation with research institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, and provided an opportunity for students of the Applied Physics educational program to undergo pre-diploma practice and perform qualification work under the guidance of leading specialists of research institutions and organizations.
During the years of work of the department, a scientific and pedagogical school of applied physics was formed.
Training in the specialty 105 Applied Physics and Nanomaterials is conducted in accordance with the requirements of the Standard of Higher Education approved by the Ministry of Education of Ukraine by Order No. 804 dated 16.06.20
