It is with pain and anger that we perceive every report of the destruction of energy infrastructure facilities on our territory by our savage neighbor. The more grateful and respectful we are to the power engineers who, under fire and sometimes at gunpoint, perform their professional duties, ensuring the efficiency and safety of generation facilities. Tomorrow, today's students of the Institute of IATE will join their senior colleagues in the operation and management of energy facilities.

They realize the full responsibility of their future mission. Therefore, they are diligently mastering knowledge and skills, and they are taught by experienced practitioners and well-known scientists in their field. JSC NAEK Energoatom is interested in replenishing its staff with young modern specialists and has introduced a personalized scholarship to encourage the best students for their academic achievements, participation in social, sports and scientific activities. The following is a conversation about the present and the future with the current scholarship holders from the Department of Nuclear Energy.

Yevhen Bezruchenko, gr. TYA-12: I was born and raised in the city of Slavutych. Since school years, I have been interested in nuclear energy because I wanted to know what my father does and why he does it. By the way, he still works at the Atomremontservis branch of Energoatom. An additional impetus to my interest was the story of my mother, who was an immigrant from the 10-kilometer exclusion zone. Her story about the Chornobyl NPP accident further strengthened my desire to try my hand at this field. When I was still a schoolboy, I took part in the essay competition on “Nuclear Energy and the World” and characterized the development of nuclear energy from its inception to the present day. I also created a printed model of a nuclear power plant and described the location of its main facilities. It was really cool.

After graduating from Slavutych Lyceum, I entered Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, specialty 143 “Nuclear Energy”. Now I am a fourth-year student. During this time, in addition to the main program, he took courses in dosimetry and protection against ionizing radiation from the Slavutych branch of the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”. In addition, he received two certificates from the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) after completing distance learning courses: "Introduction to Nuclear Safety Culture" and "Overview of IAEA Safety Standards".

Recently, I have become interested in the subject "Fundamentals of Operation", because we practice on a modern multifunctional simulator of the operator's part of the VVER-1000 control panel. It has been actively used in the educational process of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute since 2023. The equipment for the Institute of IATE was provided by the Argonne National Laboratory with the support of the US Department of Energy. This simulator allows students to get acquainted with the control systems of nuclear power plants, understand their work and try themselves in the management of a nuclear power plant.

In two months, I will have a pre-graduation internship at the KhNPP branch. There I plan to get acquainted with the operation of NPP systems. In the future, I want to work in the field of nuclear energy and apply the knowledge gained at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.

Oleg Koshkin, gr. TYA-12: Thanks to my parents, I am a bit of a wandering person: I was born in Voznesensk, grew up in Khmelnytskyi, and study in Kyiv. In my family there are military men, a lawyer, an economist, and I am the first power engineer. I hope this is a good start.

Choosing a university and specialty was an important decision: For me, KPI symbolizes a high scientific culture, innovations, and the desire for development. The university is known for its high standards of education and scientific achievements. Therefore, choosing Nuclear Energy is a logical continuation of this choice: my passion for physics and desire to work in an important sector of the economy were realized here.

I would like to add that over the years of studying, I have become convinced that Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is really a place where the synergy of theoretical knowledge and practical skills gained from the best specialists in the field of nuclear energy is realized. Having chosen the specialty "Nuclear Energy", I see it as an excellent career prospect. Modern nuclear power is a complex industry that is constantly evolving, increasing the efficiency of resource use.

For me personally, nuclear power is a field for continuous self-improvement. It requires a wide range of knowledge - from fundamental physics and mathematics to specialized technologies and control systems. Such a comprehensive approach to education allows us to develop critical thinking, analytical skills and skills in solving complex problems, which are invaluable in any professional activity. I am confident that the growing environmental awareness of society, as well as global challenges related to Ukraine's energy independence, will make my work relevant and important.

Unfortunately, the war that is currently taking place on our land and for our freedom does not allow us to feel and live a rich student life, but our teachers share their knowledge and experience with us so that the quality of KPI education is maintained. I believe that my choice of the Nuclear Energy specialty at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is a way to belong to the circle of compatriots who will change the world for the better and contribute to the future of energy. In the meantime, on behalf of myself and all my peers, I would like to thank our defenders for the opportunity to study, grow professionally and prepare for the development of the country.

Oleksii Lesko, gr. TYA-12: In a few more months, I will receive my bachelor's degree in nuclear power engineering. Since childhood, I have been interested in the exact sciences, especially physics and mathematics. This passion led me to Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and became decisive in choosing my future specialty, which combines deep knowledge and opportunities for development. You could say: a dream come true.

And what else can you become when you were born and raised in Varash, a satellite town of the Rivne NPP? Inspired by the example of my parents, I became interested in nuclear energy in the 8th grade and decided that I wanted to connect my life with this industry. And I am doing everything possible to make my dream come true, because nuclear energy is the future of our country, and I want to be a part of this future.

Having chosen the motto: learning is the path to success, Oleksiy has always studied hard both at school and at university. He is one of the best students in his course and always strives for more. Since his 3rd year, he has been receiving a scholarship from Energoatom for his high academic achievements. “I believe that studying is the most important stage in the life of every person, because it is thanks to the knowledge and skills we acquire at the university that we can become real professionals in our field,” the student is convinced.

The same opinion is shared by the Department of Nuclear Energy: "Personalized scholarships are an integral part of the successful educational process, because they contribute not only to the development of the student's personality, but also to attracting the best of them to study and research, which is the key to the successful future of our country."

But the scholarship holder lives not only for his studies. In his free time, Oleksiy enjoys sports, outdoor activities, and of course, he is interested in new technologies and self-development: "I believe that a person should not only improve his or her professional qualities but also develop personally, so I always find time for my hobbies and interests."

Oleksii plans to continue his studies at the master's level, obtain a master's degree in nuclear power engineering, become a highly qualified specialist in the energy industry and contribute to the development of the nuclear power industry in Ukraine: "I am sure that nuclear energy has great potential and I want to participate in its development with dignity!"
