“Today, CLUST Space is a place that lives. It lives the life of students, even the life of the state. The highest officials of our country, representatives of the diplomatic corps of different states, scientists from different countries have visited here,” said the rector of the university Anatolii Melnychenko, speaking at a meeting dedicated to this date. ”And an important aspect of CLUST Space is that it has become one of the centers for the development of student chess. And it should become the center of chess life in Kyiv - I really hope that it will.”
The official date of opening of the CLUST Space shelter in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is January 25, 2024. “In February of that year, Clust Space started working as a coworking space, an educational space, and a shelter during air raids. That is, all its functions were available to visitors. Over the year, the shelter was visited by more than 65,000 people, including participants of various events, which took place here over 150 times during the year of operation. “These included innovation festivals, presentations, lectures, workshops organized by teachers in this space, exams, video screenings, conversation clubs, etc.,” said Yevhenia Kulyk, director of the STB, ”And during the alarms, students, teachers, people who just happened to be nearby came down to CLUST Space to take shelter at different times of the day and night. In addition, over the past twelve months, 1360 students, staff, and guests of the university have visited the smart shelter during specially organized tours.
Anatolii Melnychenko mentioned chess in his speech for a reason. On the occasion of the first anniversary of the opening, a chess tournament was held in CLUST Space. “It is a great joy for me to be here. Not to be, but to be, because we are building long-term relationships with your rector and your team. I believe that this is the only way to create something valuable, only over time,” said Oleksandr Kamyshyn, President of the Ukrainian Chess Federation and a well-known statesman, before the start of the competition. ”Together with our first vice president Volodymyr Kovalchuk, we have become not guests but partners and even, so to speak, family members. So, on the occasion of the first anniversary of CLUST Space, Oleksandr Kamyshyn, on behalf of the Federation, and taking into account the need of polytechnics for additional chess sets, presented 15 such sets to the university and announced that the Chess Federation of Ukraine had allocated a prize fund of 10 thousand hryvnias to this anniversary tournament.
According to the chairman of the student trade union committee, Ihor Stepaniuk, 55 polytechnic chess players of different qualifications - from beginners to candidates for master of sports - registered to participate in the tournament. The competitions, which were attended by both boys and girls, were organized in the format of a blitz tournament according to the Swiss system in 9 rounds with 3+2 time control. Pavlo Goncharov (FIOT) won the competition. Gleb Parfyonov (RTF) took second place, and Pavlo Nikitinets (RTF) took third.
One year to our wonderful shelter! Kyiv Polytechnic hosted a chess tournament dedicated to the one-year anniversary of the opening of the first smart shelter in Ukraine, Clust space, in the Scientific and Technical Library named after H. I. Denysenko.
The winners received certificates from the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Library for 10 hours of free room reservation in the shelter, as well as certificates for three, two, and one thousand hryvnias from the Ukrainian Chess Federation to purchase chess equipment.
“Shelter is important not only during the war, but in the long term, because our neighbor will not go anywhere even after our victory. But a smart shelter is even more important. I am glad that we celebrated our 1st anniversary! The new team under the leadership of the new rector Anatoliy Melnychenko understands well what to do and where to go,” said Oleksandr Kamyshyn, Minister of Strategic Industries of Ukraine (2023-2024), Head of the Ukrainian Chess Federation.
