The twenty-eighth International Mathematical Competition for Mathematics "IMC 2021" (International Mathematics Competition for University Students 2021) this year (for the third time) for obvious reasons was held online. Hundreds of students from dozens of universities around the world take part in it every year. This is not the first time Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute students have taken part in it. At "IMC 2021”, our team consisted of five students. Its head and member of the international jury was a senior lecturer at the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory Volodymyr Volodymyrovych Pavlenkov.
The performance of the team of Kyiv Polytechnics turned out to be more than successful. For the first time, all members of our team won diplomas! Second place went to Artem Dvornyi (FMF, OM-82), Yegor Panchenko (IASA, KA-91) and Olexii Galaganov (IASA, KA-81). The third place was taken by Denys Logvynov and Yuriy Yarosh (IASA, KA-01).
IMC is a world-famous mathematical olympiad for students of the leading HEI of their countries. For example, this year 113 teams took part in the Olympiad, and the geography of participants was not limited to European universities. Among the participants were teams from Asia, Africa and even South America. The first IMC was held in 1994 in the Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, and then became an annual. So, IMC 2021 is already the 28th Olympics. Host cities have also changed. In different years the Olympiad was held in Plovdiv, Blagoevgrad, Keszthely, London, Prague, Warsaw, Cluj, Skopje, Odessa, Budapest. Since 2010, the Olympiad is hosted by Blagoevgrad, and therefore it has already begun to be associated with this Bulgarian city.
The history of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute students' performances at the IC Olympiad began in 1999. Then the university was represented by Anton Mellit. The debut was successful - he won first place! Since then, students of our university have repeatedly become winners of the IMC. In total, in different years, our students won 13 first, 10 second and 20 third places at the Olympiad. Also, four times our students received the Grand First Place - a special award, which is won by the best of the best. The most successful in the history of performances IMC participants among gor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute members were Olexandr Rybak (one second and three Grand first places), Anton Mellit (four first places, including one Grand first place), Sergii Torba (two first places), Oleksii Slyusarenko (one first and one second place), Yuriy Tukchiy (one first place), Yevhenii Polishchuk (one first place), Oleksandr Mishyn (two second places), Vladyslav Shram (one second and one third place), Yegor Panchenko (one second and one third place).
"Students of the first four years of study at the age of no more than 23 compete in the Olympiad. The tasks for the Olympiad are selected by an international committee from those sent in advance to the chairman of the committee (in 2021 the chairman was John Jane, a professor of mathematics at London College University (UK). This year the tasks for the participants were related to the following sections of mathematics: mathematical analysis, complex analysis, algebra, geometry and combinatorics. The works of the participants are evaluated by the team leaders and members of the international jury according to known criteria, - said Volodymyr Pavlenkov. - Due to the limitations associated with the COVID-19 pandemic, students performed tasks remotely, drew up their solutions on paper and uploaded scanned copies of their work to a special website. The language of the Olympiad is English, so the students demonstrated excellent knowledge not only in mathematics but also in English. The control over the honesty of writing was entrusted to the leaders. Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute team for example, performed work using GoogleMeet with cameras on. The main slogan of the Olympiad in such a situation is "fairplay". It is worth noting that at the end, none of the participants had any doubts about the honesty of the final results. "
The success of our university team is not accidental. The staff of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory for many years successfully organizes mathematical competitions and prepares talented students for mathematical competitions at various levels. There are three scientific circles at the department: "Non-standard and olympiad problems of algebra and analysis", "Non-standard and olympiad problems of analysis and probability theory" and "Additional sections of mathematical analysis". For better coverage of various topics, depending on the material covered, classes are held separately for first-year and senior students. In recent years alone, the members of the circle have become more than 40 times winners and prize-winners of the most prestigious international and all-Ukrainian mathematics competitions.
Anyone can join the work of the circles. More information can be found on the website of the Department of Mathematical Analysis and Probability Theory and on the official page of circles in social networks.
