The meeting between the managers of PJSC “Kyivvodokanal”, the scientists of NTUU “KPI” and KNUBA, who are concerned with the problems of water purification and sewages disinfection as well as active sludge utilization, was held in August, 27 in NTUU “KPI”.
The chairman of the management board – executive director Andrij Bilyk, the Bortnutska aeration station reconstruction direction director Oleg Lusiuk, the engineer-in-chief of the waterworks operation department Volodumyr Kostiuk etc. represented PJSC “Kyivvodokanal”. Besides, the director of water supply department and canalization of SOE “Kyivinzhproekt” Sergij Sichkar was also present to get acquainted with the best practices of polytechnics.
On behalf of National technical university of Ukraine “Kyiv polytechnic institute”, the rector of university, the president of “Scientific park corporation “Kyiv polytechnic”, the academician of NAS of Ukraine Mychailo Zgurovskyi as well as Prorector for Research, academician of NAS of Ukraine Mychailo Ilchenko, vice-president of the Scientific park Victor Kamaiev, executive director of Scientific park Yaroslav Kologryvov, the director of academic center “Clean water”, head of ecology and technologies of plants polymers department of engineering and chemical faculty of NTUU “KPI” professor Mykola Gomelia and the directors of “Nature technologies” Ltd. that collaborates closely with university itself as well as Scientific park “Kyiv polytechnic” and is cofounder of academic center “Clean water”- the president Volodymyr Rysuhin and vice-president Gennady Chernovol took part in the meeting.
On behalf of Kyiv university of construction and architecture there were rector, professor Petro Kulikov, Prorector for Research and international relations professor Vitalii Ploskyi, dean of the faculty of geo information systems and territory management professor Roman Shults as well as researchers who work in particular fields.
The issues under discussion concerned extremely important problems namely, water supply in the capital and water drain and sewages purification. It is well known fact that the water, supplied to homes is in poor condition. For this reason the household filters for water purification became so widespread as well as water delivery services. Last but not least remains the fact that there are some difficulties associated with water draining and especially with waste waters purification and biological sludge disinfection etc. Bortnytska aeration station that is aimed at water purification needs urgent modernization. Having received 1 billion subsidized loan at 0.1 % of annual interest rate for a period of 40 years in terms of intergovernmental agreement with Japanese government, Kyiv authority has already taken some measures in this direction. However, “Japanese project” aims only at the most important tasks, necessary for dramatic station revamp. It doesn’t cover ways of re-cultivation of sludge fields and some other. The city requires a complete modernization of the whole water drain system and waste waters disinfection.
Naturally, we should focus on the most innovative technologies and, thus, heads of correspondent departments of Kyiv Council consult Ukrainian scientists, especially from KPI, while searching for optimal options. It is absolutely justified since the developments of Kyiv Polytechnic Engineers are highly competitive with foreign colleagues and even better in some spheres. Meeting participants could confirm this by get acquainted with the university performance in these spheres. Mykola Homel who coordinates 18 work groups at the KPI that work over water preparation, water purification, degerming and utilization of sewage water, presented this material. Presentation ‘Modern membrane technologies of water purification’ prepared by Gennadii Chernovolov was interesting as well. Mykhailo Zhurovskyi, rector of KPI, was talking about operating principles of Science Park ‘Kyiv Polytechnika’. The work in the Park allows university scientists substantially cut the way from idea to practical realization of their projects excluding involvement of state funds. This information was important for guests as well since the fundamental mechanisms of cooperation between science and business integrated in Science Park performance make it more efficient: 150 successfully fulfilled innovative projects are the best indicators.
During the discussion Andrii Bilyk paid participants’ attention to economic aspects of performance of PJSC ‘Kyivvodokanal’. which is a natural monopolist and, thus, works within determined legal boundaries. It relates to determination of potential partners and project managers who are chosen through tenders. So, economics in current situation substantially limits an ability to implement certain technologies due to their price – it mostly influences the tarrifs level for consumers. At the same time, the company needs to modernize its working efficiency and implement new technologies. General Director of PJSC ‘Kyivvodokanal’ . listed key problems that need scientific assistance to be solved: ‘treatment, dehydration and recycling of collected mud in Boryspilskyi Region in Kyiv’; treatment and utilization (disposal) of so-called ‘over-mud water’; degerming of waste water; scientific accompaniment of ‘Japanese project’ considering that a range of technologies will be implemented in Ukraine for the first time and, thus, the necessity to create regulatory structure for building of relevant constructions and their exploitation appear.’
The company concluded a cooperation agreement between Kyiv National University of Building and Architecture (KNUBA) in order to improve collaboration in this and other directions. Mykhailo Zhurovskyi suggested preparing of similar contract with NTUU ‘KPI’. However, even before drawing up the contract, participants agreed to organize workshop in which specialists of certain technologies would consider common solution of concrete issues.
