3 August 2013, a solemn opening of the monument to the outstanding Polish physical chemist and statesman and alumni of KPI Wojciech Sventoslavsky (21.6 (3.7 ) .1881- 29.4.1968) was held near the building № 4 NTUU "KPI" .
Wojciech Aloysius Sventoslavsky was born in Zhytomyr in 1881. He graduated from the Chemistry Department of the Kiev Polytechnic Institute in 1906 with a diploma of I degree. He worked in the KPI, in the universities of Moscow and Warsaw, was the rector of Warsaw University of Technology, the Minister of Education of Poland. During World War II, he taught at American universities. Subsequently, he returned to Poland and taught at the University of Warsaw and worked in the Polish Academy of Sciences, was vice-president of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry.
In the history of world science Wojciech Aloysius Sventoslavsky entered as the founder of the thermochemistry of organic compounds, the founder of the new field of physical chemistry - poliazeotropy. He is the author of the methodology of calorimeters techniques and theory of processes and coking coal tar processing, the inventor of microcalorimeters. Twice winner of the State Prize of the Polish Science (1951, 1953), twice nominated for the Nobel Prize.
"Wojciech Sventoslavsky made an enormous contribution to the development of Polish and world science. We believe that this figure, this man unite our peoples - Polish and Ukrainian - said the Rector of NTUU"KPI" NASU academician Michael Zgurovsky at the opening ceremony, - and we are honored that Wojciech Sventoslavsky, now in bronze, returns to the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute".
After canvas, obscured monument was removed, the Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine Konstantin Grishchenko made a speach before the participants of the celebrations. "Wojciech Sventoslavsky was a man who embodies the best features of both the Polish and Ukrainian peoples. His devotion to science, his devotion to the alma mater of his outstanding scientific achievements are an evidence to the fact that Kyiv Polytechnic has been and remains a leading center of science, - he stressed. - Today President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych is challenging to enhance the role of higher education and science. In this context, the KPI should play a more significant role as a center for the development of scientific knowledge and scientific developments. And today, honoring the memory of this outstanding scientist, we are confident that your University will serve to high science and strengthening the friendly relations between Ukraine and Poland. "
In his speech, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine Henryk Litwin recalled the strong tradition of friendly relations between Poland and Ukraine, and stressed that today this process is gaining new momentum and quality. "Now thousands of Polish students are studying in Ukraine, nearly ten thousand of Ukrainian - in Poland. Scientific training programs, programs double degree are developing, - he said. - So, our relationship will be even closer, and perhaps when our descendants will be able to open up new monuments to outstanding personalities like Wojciech Sventoslavsky, and talk about the friendly relations between Ukraine and Poland. "
The opening was also attended by the Rector of the Warsaw University of Technology Jan Schmidt, president of the Polish Educational Foundation "Perspectives" Waldemar Sivinsky, chairman of the Section of pupils KPI in Poland Janusz Fuchs, author of the monument honored artist of Ukraine sculptor Nicholay Olejnik, teachers, scientists, students of NTUU "KPI" and others .
A round table "Wojciech Sventoslavsky - the person who brings the peoples of Ukraine and Poland" with the participation of Ukrainian and Polish researchers was held in frame of the program of events to celebrate the opening of the monument.
Finally the presentation of a joint project of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine and NTUU "KPI" to create a Teaching and Research "Ukrainian-Polish center of excellence for renewable energy technologies and energy efficiency" was held. The project, financed from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland, is being successfully implemented at the Department of Renewable Energy of Faculty of Electric Power Engineering and Automation. The Dean of the Faculty Yandulsky Alexander, head of the department Stepan Kudrya and curator of the Polish side, the Second Secretary of the Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Ukraine, Bartosz Musyalovich described to the participants and guests of of celebrations its main objectives, milestones and expected results .
