In recent years, both in our and neighboring countries are hotly debated the rules of an enrollment students in higher education institutions. At the same time it is discussed an improvement of the training quality. It is clear that the quality of specialists depends on their preliminary knowledge.
In this context, I think readers will be interested to know how this procedure was carried out in KPI in the past, when the people who studied here, glorified later the institute.
In the Hall of the works of scientists KPI is preserved extremely interesting booklet called "Guide for applicants in Kiev Industrial Institute in 1938". The brochure describes the Institute, its departments, specialties, conditions of learning and living. Also, it has a section "entrance examinations", which will be cited here almost completely
Here are some of the questions from the two sections "Programs entrance exams," so that everyone can evaluate whether he can learn in the KPI at a time when there was studying the future academician and president of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Paton.
Entrance examinations
Entrance exams to the institute start from the 1st of August and end on August 20.
Admittance committee includes the applicants in the groups of 30-35 people each.
All applicants will undergone the written examinations:
a) on arithmetic and algebra;
b) geometry and trigonometry;
c) in the Russian language;
d) in the Ukrainian language.
and oral examinations:
a) mathematics (all sections);
b) in physics;
c) chemistry;
g) on the Russian language and literature;
d) in the Ukrainian language and literature;
e) political education;
g) on one of the foreign language - English, German or French - at the request of the applicant.
First, as a rule, all applicants undergone a written examination, and then - oral.
Written exams are carried out by multiple groups (150-200 people), oral examinations - each group separately on a regular schedule.
On written exams in mathematics everyone gets a separate sheet with written individual task. The task generally consists of two or three exersices.
For the written examination in mathematics is given 3 hours. On written examinations in Russian and Ukrainian languages is given several topics (usually - one theme with a modern Soviet literature, one - with a classic pre-revolutionary literature, one of Western literature, one - with the social and political life), each applicants writes an essay on one of the themes by choice. On the written examination of each language is given 3 hours. On written exams the applicants should have their own pen; there is no need to bring a paper: all applicants will be provided with the sheets of paper with a stamp of the institute.
The books on the written examinations are not allowed. Fro the written exams in mathematics it is allowed to bring only the tables of logarithms.
Oral examinations in each discipline are carried out by the committee consisting of several people, but each applicant passes the test only to one of the committee members.
At oral examinations for Russian and Ukrainian languages the applicants are provided with sentences for morphological and syntactic analysis, there are also questions on grammar and spelling, and then questions from the literature.
At the oral examination in mathematics included the task to solve, the theorem to prove, the task to solve by the method of building.
At oral examinations in physics and chemistry each applicant receives written assignment ("ticket"), consisting of several theoretical issues and problems. After thinking he should prepare a written answers to questions and solve the problem in detail.
At the oral examination the applicant will be asked in foreign language, he should answer in the same language, then it is necessary to read and translate a small text, answer the questions on grammar and write some sentences.
Exam in political education is in the form of conversation to the extent determined by the program.
At oral examinations in mathematics, physics and chemistry every applicant will be provided with enough time to think and perform the resulting problem: oral examinations in all languages and political education are conducted in the form of a conversation without a predefined task.
In all disciplines examinations are held in the volume, which is defined for each discipline in the program for entering higher education in the USSR in 1938.
