Now, partners who have made the greatest contribution to the implementation of state policy in the field of higher education and science can be nominated for the highest university award – the “For Merit to Igor Sikorsky KPI” award. The first nominees have already received their badges.
The award's designer, Oleksandr Sopov, a KPI graduate and now an entrepreneur and public figure, Honored Worker of Industry of Ukraine, and director of the Order Production and Creative Association, spoke about the creation and manufacture of the award.
The “For Merit” badge is made of copper alloys, consists of four parts, and has the shape of a convex 48-pointed star with an 8-pointed star symmetrically placed on top of it. In the center of the badge is a round medallion with the inscriptions “FOR MERIT” at the top and “TO THE IGOR SIKORSKY KPI” at the bottom. In the center of the medallion, against a blue enamel background, there is a separate convex coat of arms of KPI. The dimensions of the badge are 64x64 mm. Coating: 48-point star – nickel; 8-point star, medallion, and KPI coat of arms – electroplated gold.
Of course, it is interesting to know what these elements symbolize. “The 48-pointed star means the light of knowledge spreading from the university in all directions,” Alexander Mikhailovich shares with inspiration. "The multi-pointedness reflects the diversity of scientific directions and schools of KPI. The 8-pointed star embodies integrity, harmony, and balance between science, education, technology, and spirituality. Eight rays are a traditional sign of rebirth and the pursuit of perfection. The circle of the medallion is a sign of the unity of the university community, the continuity of traditions, and the succession of generations.
Blue enamel is the color of science, intellect, depth of knowledge, and dignity. Gold symbolizes achievement, high merit, and recognition. Silver (nickel) is the color of honesty, integrity, and dedication to science and the university. The KPI coat of arms in the center is the main symbol of belonging to the Kyiv Polytechnic community, the continuity of the traditions of Igor Sikorsky and all creators of technical progress.
“Ten stakeholders of the university have already been awarded,” said Valeria Kholyavko, scientific secretary of KPI. These are the O.O. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, the Kolo Charitable Foundation, the O.V.
