From June 2 to 6, 2025, a training seminar was held in Ljubljana (Slovenia) as part of the Erasmus+ Open4UA project — Open Science for the Higher Education System of Ukraine. The event was attended by a delegation from Igor Sikorsky KPI, representatives of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, and representatives of Ukrainian and foreign universities that are partners in the consortium.
The main purpose of the visit of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute delegation was to present university approaches to the implementation of open science at the international level, share the first results of piloting new practices in higher education institutions, and establish partnerships in the field of research data management.
Participants of the seminar from Igor Sikorsky KPI:
Georgy Vasilyev, Associate Professor, Department of Electrochemical Production Technology, Faculty of Chemical Technology, Coordinator of the Open4UA project — Open Science for the Higher Education System of Ukraine;
Ivan Pyshnohraiev, Associate Professor, Department of Artificial Intelligence, Educational and Scientific Institute of Applied System Analysis, Open4UA project implementer — Open Science for the Higher Education System of Ukraine.The seminar focused on practical solutions that facilitate the transition of Ukrainian universities from declarations to the actual implementation of open science.
In particular:
the formation and implementation of open science policies at the university level, both in Europe and Ukraine;
effective management of research data, including the development of institutional policies and data management plans (DMPs);
the role of research data management specialists — a separate session was devoted to the best practices of EU universities in training such personnel.
The delegation from Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute presented a university toolkit for the implementation of open science in higher education institutions. The toolkit was developed as part of a project work package coordinated by our university. The toolkit can be used to implement open science practices in higher education institutions in Ukraine. You can find it here (https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.15293056).
Special emphasis was placed on the topic of research data management: a representative of the University of Ljubljana shared her experience in implementing data steward functionality. This is extremely relevant for Ukraine, as the Ministry of Education and Science is currently developing a professional standard for “Research Data Management Specialist.” At the same time, the H.I. Denisenko Scientific and Technical Library has already hired Ukraine's first specialist in this field.
Consultations on placing data in open access are available. For more details, please visit: https://www.library.kpi.ua/open-science/styuard-danyh/. Such measures are part of systematic efforts to make Ukrainian science visible to the world and Ukrainian researchers fully integrated into the European scientific community.
Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute is a leader among Ukrainian higher education institutions in the implementation of open science, being the first Ukrainian higher education institution to introduce an open science policy back in 2022.
