At the end of July in the Bulgarian city of Blagoevgrad a traditional international competition among the best Mathematics students was held - IMC (International Mathematics Competition for UniversityStudents). This event is considered to be one of the most prestigious annual world competitions for young mathematicians. For over 22 years of its history more than 200 students from leading universities in over 50 countries took part in the olympiad, including the students of Cambridge, Oxford, Moscow and St. Petersburg universities. The olympiad is organized by London University College, among its sponsors is the Wolfram Research company, a developer of the famous Package "Mathematica", and a publishing house "Springer", one of the leaders in the field of scientific, technical and medical literature.
Competitions take 5 hours each of two days. The tasks of algebra, analysis, geometry and combinatorics are chosen at a meeting of the jury from the list of tasks that president of the jury was receiving during the year. The works are checked by team leaders and other teachers using the criteria of the jury. The working language of the event is English.
Mathematicians of KPI have already represented our university in this competition many times. Only since 2011 to 2013 students of the Institute of Applied System Analysis were the winners of this prestigious competition 5 times. This year's runner-up certificate came from Bulgaria with fourth year student of IASA Vladimir Mikhailovsky.
Vladimir is a member of "Custom Olympiad problems and Algebra and Analysis", which operates at the department of mathematical analysis and probability calculus. The club was founded in 2008 upon the initiative of the former Head of Department Professor V. Buldyhin to prepare talented young people for the Ukrainian and international student olympiads and to encourage them to take part in scientific projects on modern Mathematics. At the courses all the main topics from Mathematics Contest are discussed, for example, in linear algebra, analytic geometry, mathematical analysis, differential equations, combinatorics, probability calculus and so on. Participants are offered numerous taskss from Ukrainian, Russian, foreign and international competitions.
Over the last eight years, members of the club became winners of various Maths competitions for more than 40 times and got numerous certificates of Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine. Only at the final stage of Ukrainian Student Olympiad in Mathematics, held in May 2015 in Sumy State University, Vladimir Mikhailovsky (IASA) and Alexander Kolesnik (FEL), Kateryna Matviiv (IASA), Vladimir Fomenko (FIVT) and Vlad Dziuba (FIVT) became winners.
Congratulations to all the winners. We wish them success in their studies, scientific work and in fufure competitions!
