Kiev offers its residents and visitors ample opportunities for recreation and entertainment. Particular attention should be paid to the theaters of the capital - they have a varied and exciting repertoire and interesting history.
In the XI century Kyiv residents were entertained with the presentations of buffoons. They are depicted on ancient frescoes of St. Sophia Cathedral. A first permanent theater in Kiev appeared at the beginning of the XIX century, in 1804. The building was made of wood and is located at the Horse Square, which was later renamed into the Theatre, and now it is the European square (on the site of the theater now it is located the Ukrainian House).
In 1834, not far from the tsar’s palace it was built for the people of Kiev Summer Theatre. It is interesting that now near the Mariinsky Palace there is also an outdoor stage on which there are representations and musical evenings.
Among existing churches of Melpomene Theatre Ivan Franko can boast the longest history. Its building, once known as "theater Solovtsov", opened its doors to visitors in 1898.
