The Department of Space Engineering (SE) was established at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 2019, simultaneously with the creation of the educational and scientific Institute of Aerospace Technologies, on the initiative of Academician Mykhailo Zgurovsky and with the participation of the CEO of the aerospace company FIREFLY AEROSPACE (USA), founder of the NGO “ASOCIATIA NOOSFERA” Maksym Polyakov.
The creation of the educational and scientific Institute of Aerospace Technologies, and accordingly the Department of Space Engineering at Igor Sikorsky KPI, was a natural result of the development of aviation and rocket and space technology, given that Ukraine is a space power with a rich past and confident potential for the future.
On the initiative of the NGO “ASOCIATIA NOOSFERA” and the aerospace company FIREFLY AEROSPACE (USA), in 2019, training of specialists in the specialty “Aviation and Rocket and Space Technology” with a master's educational professional program “Rocket and Space Complexes” based on the dual education model was launched.
The implementation of the dual education program is based on the Agreement of June 27, 2020, between the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute,” the public organization “ASOCIATIA NOOSFERA” and the limited liability company “FAIRFLY AEROSPACE UKRAINE,” which stipulates cooperation in the fields of education, science, and innovation.
At the same time, to implement the academic mobility program, an agreement was signed between the National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” and Dnipro National University named after Oles Honchar, which provides students with the opportunity to study at Dnipro National University and acquire practical skills at the production sites of Firefly Aerospace Ukraine Limited Liability Company.
Currently, a training program has been developed that provides for joint training with NOOSPHERE (USA) (in Ukraine – the public organization “ASOCIATIA NOOSFERA”) for the targeted training of masters for the rocket and space company FIREFLY (USA) (in Ukraine – LLC “FIREFLY AEROSPACE UKRAINE”). At the same time, future master's students have the opportunity to combine their studies with work at the FIREFLY AEROSPACE UKRAINE LLC Center (Dnipro), working on real projects to develop light launch vehicles that will deliver cargo into space (satellites). Classes are held at Igor Sikorsky KPI and the rocket and space design center of FIREFLY AEROSPACE UKRAINE LLC.
