September 30, 2013 marks 100 years since the birth of Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences , Honored Figure of Science of the USSR , Doctor of Chemistry, Professor Lev Ivanovich Antropov - eminent scientist , a gifted teacher and organizer of science , founder of the world -famous scientific school " Electrochemical Kinetics " .

L.I.Antropov is the author of numerous fundamental developments regarding the problems of kinetics of electrode processes on the structure of the electrical double layer theory elektrocatalysis and electrosynthesis of organic compounds , corrosion and protection of metals. He established his scientific school which develops new areas of Theoretical and Applied Electrochemistry, provides an effective means of protecting metals against corrosion, new advanced technologies, electrochemical sensors for monitoring air pollution .

In 1936 L.I.Antropov graduaded from Urals Industrial Institute (Sverdlovsk ). As a student, he engaged in research at the department of theoretical electrochemistry of the Institute, and supervised student’s practical work as a freelance assistant professor. In 1939 he defended his thesis at the Institute of General and Inorganic Chemistry (Moscow) in 1945 – Doctor of colloidal electrochemical Institute of the USSR. Head of the Department of Electrochemistry, Physical and Colloid Chemistry Yerevan Polytechnic Institute (1940-1948), Department of electrochemical production Novocherkask Polytechnic Institute (1948-1960)

In 1957-1960 L.I.Antropov worked as an expert UNESCO in India, where he was engaged in research work, supervised the preparation of highly qualified, organized in Bombay Institute of Technology Department of Electrochemistry. Works of this period brought scientists recognized as one of the leading electrochemical world. During these years L.I.Antropov firstly pointed out the connection of the kinetics of electrochemical reactions electrode surface charge and offered potential j-scale that characterizes the charge of the metal surface. This scale has received international recognition, is widely used in solving different tasks electrochemistry called Antropov’s scale. Series of works had a great importance for the development of the theory of catalysis about nature of the impact on the processes of hydrogen overvoltage electroreduction of organic compounds in different metals.

Since 1960 to 1986 he headed the department of the technology electrochemical production ( TEHV) Kiev Polytechnic Institute. In 1962 he organized the Department of problematic research laboratory. Since 1986 until the end of his life worked as a professor and consultant of the department TEHV.

His name is associated with the flourishing science department TEHV. During this period, expanding the range of issues that investigates scientist. He continues to fundamental research in the field of kinetics of electrode processes, electrochemical energy, exploring the role of solvated electrons in electrochemical processes, pays great attention to the theoretical aspects of the inhibitory metal protection , electrochemical deposition of metals and alloys. L.I.Antropov creates a new quantitative theory of corrosion inhibitors , which he called "formal" , which takes into account the contribution of various properties of compounds in inhibiting the corrosion process . This theory is today widely used by professionals in the development of effective corrosion inhibitors and mixtures thereof. A scientist and his students have created and introduced new advanced industry technologies of metal and composite surfaces , control and measuring devices to determine the corrosion rate of metals , effective corrosion inhibitors for different purposes (inhibitors of CPI -1 , CPI -2 , CPI -3 ... KPI- 18), chemical power sources with a lithium anode , the first in Eastern Europe mercuri-free electrollitic cells and others.

A brilliant speaker and gifted teacher, L.I.Antropov played a huge role in training highly qualified engineers and scientists of electrochemical craftsmanship . Among his pupils - 2 academics and 2 corresponding members of the USSR, more than 10 doctors and 50 candidates of science. Open-mindedness and diversity of interests , high erudition and knowledge of foreign languages (English, German, French - fluent) always attracted to it professionals , colleagues, students , contributed to further expand the creative department links with other organizations.

Much energy gave L.I.Antropov to scientific-organizational and social activities. He coordinated the work of the Council for Mutual Economic Assistance socialist countries on the theory of inhibitors of acid corrosion of metals , for many years a member of the bureau of science and technology councils SCST USSR and the USSR to protect metals from corrosion and head of one of their sessions , a member of the editorial boards of the journals "Corrosion Sience", " electrochemistry ", " Protection of metals ", member of the Scientific Council of electrochemistry of the USSR and a number of specialized councils. He was a director and member of the scientific delegations at international congresses and symposia , gave a series of lectures and presentations at research centers in the U.S. , Britain, France, Italy , Japan and Eastern Europe.

L.I.Antropov published about 500 scientific papers. His book " Theoretical Electrochemistry " was published four times in Russian , English , French, Hungarian, Ukrainian and Chinese and is now a best seller science .

During his multifaceted teaching career Lev Ivanovich was awarded the Order " Red Banner of Labor ", " Honor ", diplomas and medals, awarded the State Prize of the USSR ( 1975) and the Prize of the USSR Academy by L.V Pisarzhevsky (1991).

Antropov’s school published about 20 monographs , textbooks , defended 7 PhD and nearly 100 master's theses. In other research institutions graduates of the department defended about 20 doctoral and 200 master's theses. Scientific directions initiated by L.I.Antropov , develop the department TEHV his students - Ph.D. Y.S.Herasymenko (electrochemical methods for determining the rate of corrosion of metals) , Dr. M.I.Donchenko (research in electroplating ), prof. I.S.Pohrebova (theory of action and create a metal corrosion inhibitor ).

Student L.I.Antropova prof. V.P.Chviruk ( Head of Department. TEHV from 1986 to 2008 ) formed a new scientific field - solid state electrochemical systems with proton and electrolyte matrix and frame catalytically active gas diffusion electrodes , which is successfully continuing prof. O.V.Linyucheva ( Head of Department. Since 2008) , developing of modern competitive electrochemical devices and methods. The result was the creation of a unified research series gas sensors and generators of new generation, which surpassed in terms of global patterns and are widely used in Ukraine and abroad to monitor the environmental safety of air.

Lev Ivanovich Antropov died July 8, 1994 . His students honored the memory of his teacher and supervisor. The facade of the building № 4 "KPI" , where he was for many years as a scientist ,installed the memorial plaque , Laboratory of Theoretical Electrochemistry Department TEHV is named after him . Based Antropov’s Scholarship which is for talented students . World's most respected electrochemical Dzh.Bokris and B.Konvey carried L.I.Antropov among the 12 scientists who laid the foundation of modern electrochemistry , and he created a scientific school - one of the leading electrochemical schools.

To his students , he always remained a model of intellectual and scholar.
