On the day of the 154th anniversary of the birth of the prominent Ukrainian scientist Yevhen Oskarovych Paton, a memorial plaque was unveiled at the entrance to the house where he lived. This house is located on the territory of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, and the Paton family lived in it for more than 30 years. So this is the second plaque at the entrance to the house. The first one, dedicated to his son, the successor of family traditions and longtime head of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Borys Paton, was unveiled in 2021.
"The names of Yevhen Oskarovych and Borys Yevhenovych Paton are associated with many of the brightest pages of the history of our university," said Mykhailo Zgurovsky, Rector of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, at the beginning of the opening ceremony. His formula "science-production-staff" formed the basis for the innovative development of the university and is fundamental for us to this day... Borys Paton was also born in this building in 1918, who spent his childhood here on the territory of KPI and was formed as a personality KPI is proud of its outstanding professor Yevhen Paton, its outstanding graduate Borys Paton and many, many of their cases that began here and then went out into the world."
The rector thanked the author of the plaque, sculptor Oleksandr Kuzmin, who has already gone down in the history of the university thanks to his works that now adorn the territory of KPI, and, of course, its patron, President of the Minor Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Stanislav Dovhyi.
Among those who came to the opening was Borys Paton's student, Academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine Leonid Lobanov. "The name of Eugene Oskarovych Paton is inscribed in golden letters in the history of national and world science. And it is inextricably linked with the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. Here he created and headed the Department of Bridge Construction for 25 years, and later the Department of Electric Welding. "His entire life was devoted to research and training of professional staff in the fields of bridge construction and electric welding," he recalled. "Eugene Paton also founded the Institute of Electric Welding in Kyiv, which now bears his name, and with his students did a lot for the development of national science and technology.
Stanislav Dovgyi spoke about this building, and about Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in general, in a very figurative way: "Every country has a piece of land where the source of its origin is. For our country, this land is the village of Moryntsi, where Taras Shevchenko was born... If we take science, I would say that this place, where Borys Paton made his first steps, where his father Yevhen Oskarovych Paton created his schools of bridge construction and electric welding, and where his ideas were born, is the source of national science."
And now Mykhailo Zgurovsky, Stanislav Dovgyi, Leonid Lobanov and Oleksandr Kuzmin, to the applause of the participants of the celebration, remove the canvas that had been covering the gray granite plaque with the bas-relief of Eugene Oskarovych Paton. From now on, everyone who visits this historic building, which was built on the university's territory more than 120 years ago, will be greeted by sculptural portraits of its prominent residents.
Finally, the participants of the plaque unveiling laid flowers at the monument to Eugene Oskarovych Paton on the Museum Square of the university campus.
🎥 The father of welding is 154!
The legend of welding and bridge construction, a native of France, but a true Ukrainian in spirit, Yevhen Paton turned 154 years old. He devoted 30 of them to Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute.
Maestro Paton's powerful scientific school is still alive and well at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, where students are implementing advanced welding methods on the ground, underwater, and even in space. Some of his methods are helping us to defeat the enemy today.
