According to a long-standing tradition, on the eve of the start of the new academic year, a special event took place at the National Technical University of Ukraine ‘Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute’ - the Freshman Day. According to the organisers, the largest number of participants in recent years - more than three thousand freshmen - joined the holiday, which was eloquently named ‘KPIFirstYearMarathon’.
Interesting events took place directly within the faculties and institutes, in the Denysenko Scientific and Technical Library, and on the Square of Knowledge. The first-year students took part in a solemn event - initiation into students, met with representatives of the university administration, the management of institutes and faculties.
The participants of the KPIF First Year Marathon will remember the event of launching balloon propellers directly in the Denysenko Science and Technology Library. In such a way, the organisers of the event decided to celebrate the role of the world-famous aircraft designer Igor Sikorsky, whose name our university bears. More than a century ago, Igor Sikorsky - then just a student of Kyiv Polytechnic - designed his first helicopter. This was the beginning of the realisation of his dream - and the dream of Leonardo Da Vinci, who designed his propeller at the end of the 15th century.
So, on the eve of the academic year, the first-year students and library staff launched paper propellers. Participants wrote down their dreams on them and released them so that they could find a solid surface and the power to come true. The main dream of any KPI student is Ukraine's victory over the enemy. According to the organisers of the helicopter flights, their imagination was struck by how many ways the dream of all Ukrainians can be described. Dozens of beautiful hopes expressed on paper, each of which is another chain in the realisation of a common dream.
Traditionally, the Freshers' Day ended on the Polyana, where the creative teams of the Centre for Culture and Arts performed in the open air, and the members of the Music Workshop (Student Consolidation Centre) gave a live concert. In addition, the Student Council held a charity auction in aid of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and the Student Social Service organised a series of competitions for board game lovers.
The holiday is over, but the marathon is not over. The student year is ahead.
Rector's greetings:
