Oleh Kubey, a student of the Department of Physical Chemistry, who went on academic leave to defend the state, was killed during a combat mission in the Kherson region (Krynky village) on the extreme bridgehead of the left bank of the Dnipro River.
Kubey Oleh Olehovych was born on November 14, 2001 in Shepetivka, Khmelnytskyi region. In 2019, he graduated from Khmelnytsky Educational Complex No. 4 with a silver medal “For Achievement in Education”.
In the same year, Oleg entered the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, Faculty of Chemical Technology, choosing the educational program of the Department of Physical Chemistry. He studied with good and excellent grades, showed interest in certain sections of chemistry and chemical technology, and planned to start his bachelor's thesis project under the guidance of Mykola Yevhenovych Ponomariov, a leading associate professor of the department. Oleh's classmates remember him as a sociable, motivated, and extremely positive guy.
In February 2022, after the full-scale invasion of the Russian Federation into the territory of our country, he returned to Khmelnytskyi and immediately joined the local territorial defense unit. In April 2022, Oleh made an important decision - he signed a contract with the Armed Forces of Ukraine, in connection with which he took an academic leave from Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute for the period of performing duties in combat conditions.
The TRO unit where Oleh served was soon redeployed to the front line. Oleg studied well at the university and performed his duties as a light infantry rifleman with dedication and professionalism. Later, he was appointed a team leader during combat missions.
In the fall of 2022, Oleh took part in the Slobozhansk counteroffensive, which liberated most of the Kharkiv region from the invaders.
For his military merits during his service, Oleh Kubey received the rank of junior sergeant and the Golden Cross badge, the highest award given to privates and non-commissioned officers for outstanding deeds.
Oleh was on vacation in December 2023 and visited the Department of Physical Chemistry on December 13. The team of teachers and teaching and support staff of the department met Oleh, we had a warm and friendly chat over tea and sweets... Oleh told us about his military everyday life and plans for the future. He firmly decided to return to Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute after the victory and continue his studies. At the moment, we were discussing the purchase of thermal insoles for the needs of the unit where Oleg serves. On the evening of December 13, Oleh met with his classmates. The vacation lasted two weeks, and then Oleh returned to his position. It was then that he received both his rank and a high award from the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
On December 29, 2023, Oleh Kubey was killed while performing a combat mission, along with his fellow heroes, the terrorist fighters Bondar Yevhenii Serhiiovych, Havryliuk Oleksandr Vasylovych and Chernetskyi Oleksandr Mykolaiovych. The funeral service for the fallen heroes took place in Khmelnytskyi in the garrison church. He was buried on January 03 in Khmelnytskyi.
Oleh was awarded the Order for Courage of the III degree (posthumously) and the administration of Khmelnytskyi awarded him the title of “Honorary Citizen of Khmelnytskyi”.
