This open chess tournament, which took place at the end of November, was attended by 125 participants from 12 universities - and this is the largest number compared to similar chess competitions at Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. An interesting coincidence - 125 participants in the tournament dedicated to the 125th anniversary of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute! According to the decision to divide the tournament, 100 participants competed in the tournament of amateurs (beginners and chess players of the 3rd and 2nd categories), 28 (including 3 participants who took the first three places in the competitions of the first day) - in the tournament of highly qualified chess players (1st category and above).
The tournament, dedicated to the 125th anniversary of KPI, was held according to the Swiss system in 7 and 9 rounds, time control - 5+3. The intense struggle at the chessboard lasted for two days. Ivan Karaulnyi (NAU) won the first place in the amateur tournament, Bohdan Petlytskyi (DUIKT) took the second place, and Anton Pyvovarov (NAU) took the third place. Among the highly qualified chess players, Anastasia Usyk (Kyiv National University, but she received her bachelor's degree from KPI) took third place, Oleksiy Anatsky (NUFVSU) was second, and Stanislav Nepochatikh (KNUBA) was first. All winners and runners-up received medals, diplomas and cash prizes, as well as souvenirs.
Commenting on the competition for the KP newspaper, Ihor Stepaniuk, chairman of the Students' Trade Union, as one of the organizers of the tournament, expressed his gratitude for the help in holding it to Ivan Zakharchuk, head of the NUBP chess club, who is the person who performs coordination functions in chess competitions in Kyiv. He also said that in March-April the Ukrainian chess championship among higher education institutions is planned to be held in Kyiv, with Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute as one of the likely venues. He added: "With the success of this tournament, we have made a serious bid to have the Ukrainian championship held in Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute."
