An exhibition "Magic Scraps" was organized in the Picture Gallery of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute Center for Culture and Arts. 15 masters presented their works in the technique of “petchwork” during this exhibition. This English word means a special kind of fancywork, when a product is sewn out of the pieces of fabric of different shapes and textures. Both things of simple form – blankets, tablecloths, napkins, curtains, and bags, jewelry, decorative pictures and even clothes can be made in such a way. In the process of work, a canvas with a new color, pattern, sometimes, even texture, is created. Contemporary masters also perform in the technique of three-dimensional scrap sewing. All the seams of scrapped canvas are on the inside.
Creating a canvas out of scraps, applique from fabric, quilted products have long existed independently in different cultures all around the world. For example, patchwork monuments of ancient Egypt are quite famous. Almost everywhere, where people worked with a cloth, there was a need to use scraps and cut leftovers, so petchwork originated in various forms.
The exhibition in the Picture Gallery was a huge success – the flow of visitors did not stop around the clock. Masters, whose works were exhibited at the University Gallery, conducted master classes for all the interested. It should be noted, that the exhibition of petchwork technology works was organized in the walls of the university for the first time in the last decade.
