On October 23-29, 2017, the International Open Access Week was held around the world under the slogan "Open in order to ..."
Open access is a free, fast, permanent, full-text access to real-time scientific and educational materials for any user in the global information network. Open access can be applied to all forms of published research results, including reviewed and unpublished articles, conferences materials, theses, books, monographs, etc. Users may copy, use, distribute, transmit and display the work that is in the public domain, and also create and distribute derivative from it works on any digital media for any purpose, on condition of proper acknowledgement of authorship.
The celebration of the International Open Week Opening Week was initiated by the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition (SPARC) with the help of its supporters in the student community in 2008. This is an event at which representatives of the academy have the opportunity to jointly explore the potential benefits of open access, share their achievements and inspire colleagues to make open access a standard in their research life.
Initially, each organization that participated in the Open Access Week chose its own topic. Since 2012, official international topics have been created, to which all the events of the Week are devoted. For example, in 2015, the topic was "Open for Collaboration", in 2016 - "Open in Action".
This year, the topic of the International Open Access Week was the slogan "Open in order to ..." - "Outdoor to ..." This formulation of the topic was intended to help focus on defining the ultimate goals of openness in order to encourage the academic community to achieve them.
H.I. Denysenko Scientific and Technical Library actively participated in the International Week of Open Access during October 23-27, organizing various events aimed at supporting the openness of research , choosing the most relevant topics for various members of their university community.
The International Open Week commenced with participation in the all-Ukrainian flashmob "Open lock", aimed at informing and attracting attention to the issues of open access to different auditoriums of researchers or ordinary citizens. The flashmob simultaneously took place in different regions of Ukraine - Kyev, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Lviv, Odesa, Mykolaiv, Rivne and others.
The same day, university researchers learned about one of the new advanced forms of distance education, which involves using the online environment as a space for studying various disciplines - massive open online courses. Advisor, Radmila Segol, Associate Professor at the Department of Publishing Studies at the NTUU “Igor Sikorsky KPI”Candidate of Social Communications Sc., informed students about the possibilities of additional and mixed learning, about the experience of mixed learning at the KPI, Lviv Ivan Franko National University, Lviv National Polytechnic University and Ukrainian Catholic University. In addition, the speaker outlined a number of platforms that students can use to study now - the foreign projects Udacity, Coursera, EdX, Ukrainian - Prometheus and EdEra.
On October 24, the weekly celebration continued with the seminar "ArXiv for Researchers: Search and Posting Opportunities." Speaker Valentyna Andrushchenko, Head. the Department of the State Fund for Fundamental Research, briefed the participants on the development and new opportunities for Arxiv (arxiv.org), the largest archive of electronic publications and their open access preprints. The speaker outlined the thematic orientation of the resource, which includes materials on astronomy, physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, statistics and financial mathematics. Users of the archive have the opportunity to freely search and work on scientific materials of the resource, and registered authors can put their scientific works there for free access. V. Andrushchenko also informed the audience about how Arxiv became a daily informational tool for many scholars around the world and dwelt on the procedures for submission, review, approval and placement of materials. In addition, she emphasized that new sections appeared on the platform - Economics and Electrical Engineering and Systems Science.
The issues of current importance conserning references in scientific works with respect to academic honesty and placement of research results in open depositories were considered by the consultants of the Center of Information Support of Education and Research of the KPI Library on October 26 during the scientific -practical seminars "APA Citation Style - international citation style and references in scientific works" and "Institutional repository ELAKPI: how with the joint efforts we can form a high-quality electronic collection of the university".
The first seminar "APA Citation Style - International Citation Style and Reference in Scientific Papers" has begun a new series of scientific and practical seminars on international citation styles. Participants learned about the APA Style (American Psychiatric Association), one of the most popular citation styles in the field of social sciences. Tetiana Nizhynska, a consultant at the Center of Information Support for Education and Research of the KPI Library, considered how to properly paraphrase, quote a line or block quote, and organize the list of used sources. Knowledge and skills of citing information sources in accordance with international standards are important in the context of designing scientific articles for the purpose of their subsequent submission to publication in well-established publishing houses, as well as for arranging the list of used sources, since today, according to the order of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine "On Approval of Requirements for the Theses", writers of dissertations can choose independently one of the 11 international styles of citation (MLA style, APA-1,2, Chicago / Tura¬bianstyle, Harvard style, ACS, AIP, IEEE, Vancouver, OSCOLA, APS, Springer MathPhys Style).
You can familiarize yourself with the rules of quotation and assignment in scientific works for various fields of knowledge in accordance with the most popular international styles, using the methodological recommendations "International Citation Styles and Assignments in Scientific Papers" available on the site of the Library in the rubrics "Researchers". In addition, you can always contact the Center of Information Support for Education and Research of the KPI Library (science@library.kpi.ua) on matter of references in accordance with international styles.
During the second seminar, the issue of the importance of the electronic archive of scientific and educational materials at the KPI for university and researchers, as well as a new resource interface, search, registration and placement of academic texts was looked into. The speaker managed to convince the audience that the new interface of the electronic archive greatly facilitates the search for the relevant full text materials that are necessary for the organization of educational and research activities. The detailed master class emphasized the important steps of registration and independent placement of materials by the author, which should contribute to the more systematic development of ELAKPI. The electronic version of the user's guide on registration and placement of materials is available on the main page of the archive (ela.kpi.ua), and you can get advice on the e-archive in the hall number 1 (3rd floor). , tel. 204-97-24, or by e-mail elakpi@library.kpi.ua.
Also, during the Week the KPI Library acknowledged the researchers who are most actively working on the development of the university's electronic collection and open their works at ELAKPI. Researchers-leaders in active independent addition of works are: Yurii Yehorovych Nikolaienko (TEF), Pavlo Vasylovych Kondrashev (MMI), Oleksandr Mykolaiovych Terentiev (IASA), Valentyn Fedorovych Petryk (PBF), Olviia Oleksandrivna Husak (VPI), Galyna Anatoliivna Bohdan (PBF ). Also, employees of the Library created pages on Wikipedia as a gift for scientists of the KPI with references to their open access works - Viktor Mykhailovych Spivak (for a conscientious mastery of the art of self-archiving of a scientific work during 2017) and Petro Ivanovych Bidiuk (for consistent promotion of ELAKPI).
NTB invites all interested researchers to join the process of editing and creation of the pages of scholars, scientific publications at the NTUU I”gor Sikorsky KPI” on Wikipedia.
