Every year on November 15th academic community of Warsaw Polytechnic University celebrates the Day of the University. Pro-rector of International Relations, member of Ukraine NAS Sergey Sidorenko from the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" took part in these events. He shared his impressions of the trip with “KPI”.
“KPI” and the Warsaw Polytechnic University – universities with a long history. They were founded by a decree of Tsar Nicholas II in 1898. Today, our universities are in cooperation in different programs, and continue to develop these relationships.
The Day of Warsaw Polytechnic University started with the speech of the Rector John Schmidt and Polish Minister of Science and Higher Education Barbara Kudrytska at a meeting of the Senate of the University. In his opening statement, Rector warmly responded to many years of fruitful collaboration with NTUU "KPI" and he hopes to have relationships for a long time.
As part of the celebration took place a ceremony of awarding diplomas and awards for students and their supervisors, who had prizes for the best scientific work at the university. Many professors, senior lecturers, graduate students received government awards and prizes for their exemplary work.
Then there was another significant event – the opening of a sculptural portrait of the famous Polish chemist, the inventor of widely used method of crystal growth from melts, Professor Jan Czochralski of Warsaw Polytechnic University. Silicon monocrystals, which are used in microelectronics, were grown with the help of this method. Before the opening of the monument was the decision of Polish Seym to declare 2013 the year of the famous scientist.
After the opening of the sculptural portrait began scientific session of professors, where, in particular, the history of the formation of the University was discussed, its development and tradition, as well as the activities and life of Jan Czochralski. Program of events on November 15 also envisaged student competition "Miss Warsaw University" and "Mister Warsaw University," and, by the way, the winners of such events in “KPI” also were invited.
During the Day of Warsaw University was conducted a series of negotiations with the leadership of the university and figures of science and culture. In particular, took place meetings with the Rector Jan Schmidt, Vice-Rector of Science Raymond Batsevich, Pro-rector Władysław Wieczorek, Vice-Rector for International Relations Stanislav Vintsentsyak, Deputy Minister of science and higher education Jacek Hulinskyy.
At the negotiations they discussed the agreement on the expansion of common project activities in science and technology between Kyiv and Warsaw University in the framework of the European Union "Horizon 2020" and in the education sector in the framework of "Tempus" program of scientific and academic exchanges «Erasmus Mundus» etc. Also they discussed the idea of holding the spring 2014 Forum in Warsaw.
The previous forum was held at the Ukrainian-Polish Centre in “KPI”, 2009. Nowadays, there is a need in a new meeting of rectors, and forum should give a new impetus to the development of Ukrainian-Polish cooperation in the academic, scientific and technical fields. It is a partnership and years of working experience between the universities will be able to open before the Ukrainian and Polish students a new horizon in strengthening the cooperation and scientific development and empowerment of the use of the creative potential of our scientists.
