Valentyn Porfyrovych Yatsenko was born May 21, 1937, in Ivanivka, Khabarovsk region in a military family. On graduating from Kyiv Medical Institute in 1960 he became a surgeon.
His deep interest in the plastic surgery led him to Kyiv Research Institute of hematology and blood transfusion. Here he started dealing with problems of de- and regeneration, peripheral nerves preservation and transplantation.
In 1966 V. P. Yatsenko was appointed to the position of assistant professor of the histology and embryology department at Kyiv medical institute. In 1968 he defended the Ph.D. thesis, devoted to peripheral nerves preservation and transplantation problem. In 1980 Valentyn Porfyrovych became an associate professor in this department. At that time the development of such area of experimental surgery as medical polymers get started. However, the scientist believed that the innovative morphological science cannot develop efficiently without knowledge of the exact sciences. In 1979 he graduated by correspondence from Kyiv teaching institute, he studied at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics, specializing in Math.
Valentyn Porfyrovych and his colleagues were granted the National Award in Science and Technology for the contribution to “Polymers in Medicine” with their study of medical polymers biodegradation mathematical consistent patterns (1987).
In 1987 the scientist defended his doctoral thesis on the problems of mathematical analysis of morphological changes in afferent nerve cells with the damaged peripheral nerves at different stages of ontogeny.
Professor V. P. Yatsenko first established the phenomenon of amplification of rDNA in the afferent neuron nucleolus as a possible mechanism of physiological and reparative regeneration in the peripheral nervous system. In 1996, the National Award in Science and Technology for significant contribution to the development of fundamental problems of de- and regeneration, preservation and transplantation of peripheral nerves was granted to the scientist and the leading neurosurgeons of Ukraine.
Valentyn Porfyrovych is the author of over 400 scientific papers, including 2 monographs, 12 inventions, 192 regular and methodical publications. He is the honored inventor of the USSR. The following research areas are presented in his works: polymers in medicine, biomedicine and space telemedicine, medical informatics and mathematical methods in theoretical and applied medicine, experimental medicine (laser technologies, cryopreservation, cardiology, pulmonology, radiology) and others.
Professor V. P. Yatsenko’s international scientific and public activity is known far beyond Ukraine. In 1992-1994 being a Vice-Rector for International Cooperation in the National Medical University, he was the coordinator of the US-Ukraine Partnership program, which brought about the foundation of the first in Ukraine Maternal Healthcare Center.
In 1994, as the coordinator of the "Telemedicine" direction, being a member of the Ukrainian delegation he participated in the negotiations between NASA and the National Space Agency of Ukraine in the United States. In 1996 he was appointed the curator of a new scientific direction "Aerospace Medicine". For many years he headed the commission of the Basic Research Council of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, became the author of the project devoted to planning techniques and examination of research projects in fundamental research.
In 2001 Valentyn Porfyrovych was invited to Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, where he headed the Department of Medical Cybernetics and Telemedicine and was appointed to the position of dean at the newly created Intercollegiate Medical Engineering Department.
He is currently the supervisor of the FBMI student group "Healthy Living" and the program "Our first course. Harmonization of personality" which covers a wide range of issues concerning the adaptation of students to the new conditions of academic, educational, social and legal areas.
Professor V. P. Yatsenko methodically implemented his knowledge into the subjects for bachelors, specialists, and masters in “Computer Science”, “Information Control Systems and Technologies” and "Medical Cybernetics and informational technologies in the telemedicine".
Valentyn Porfyrievych is a member of the International Academy of Integrative Anthropology, International Academy of Pathologists, Academic Adviser of the International Academy of Higher Education, A. M. of the Academy of Technological Cybernetics of Ukraine and A. M. of the International Academy of Astronautics (Paris).
Professor V. P. Yatsenko works successfully in the Ukrainian association "Computer Medicine", as a deputy chairman of the academic council and deputy editor of the scientific journal "Clinical Informatics and Telemedicine".
We wish you good health and further fruitful inspiration, Dear Valentyn Porfyrievych.
