He studied physics and earned Ph.D. in solid state physics from the University of Cologne. He spent a year as a visiting scientist at Argonne National Laboratory (Chicago, USA) and a year at the University of California (Berkeley). In 1987 he was enrolled in the German team of astronauts in 1993 as a research engineer made a space flight on the shuttle Spacelab (Mission D-2), where he spent 89 scientific experiments. In 1994 - 1998 years led the development of "German satellite data archive" at the German Aerospace Center in Oberpfaffenhofen. Currently professor of aerospace engineering at the Technical University of Munich (Germany).he cause of science and progress. "
He teaches, researches and develops space technology for satellite systems, particularly for robotic use. Its also involved in research in the field of system technology (system modeling and optimization), manned space systems (systems for mining and use of space resources) and the physics of high-speed pulses (analysis and simulation micrometeoroid strokes). He is the author of five books and over 80 scientific publications and numerous scientific and popular articles about space exploration.
