Research interests and direction of the Department of Technical Cybernetics Engineers (DTC) were determined when the 1944/45 academic year, associate professor, Ph.D. Olexii Hryhorovych Ivakhnenko delivered the course "Fundamentals of automatic control" for the first KPI group of constructor of electrical appliance (CEA-1) specialist of "Automatic and measuring equipment".

Established in 1969 the department DTC was headed by former student group CEA-6 (and then, after division CEA, head of group AO-6) D.Sc. Vsevolod Ivanovych Kostiuk – PH.D. and D.Sc. candidate O.H.Ivakhnenka. The department includes 15 lecturers of automation and telemechanics (AT), including 2 professors – D.Sc. O.H.Ivakhnenko, D.Sc. V.M.Kuntsevych - and 5 associate professors. In the formation of logistics base of department DTC active participation took the head of laboratory M.I.Belskyi, V.M.Fan, educational master V.M.Vasyliev and others.

Initially, the department provided a training process for 10 specialties KPI disciplines: Theory of automatic control and management, automatic drive and tracking systems, mathematical foundations of cybernetics, automation basics, and technical cybernetics. In the 1969/70 academic year V.I.Kostiuk delivered the course "Optimal and adaptive system." For a series of monographs in this area awarded first prize KPI 1975 V.I.Kostiuk, A.H.Kiku, V.Ye.Kraskevych, A.M.Silvestrov and S.V.Shpit. In the 1973/74 academic year associate professor V.V.Azhohin developed the course "The theory and application of computer control."

According to the needs of the national economic the department thrice changed the direction of preparation specialists: Automatic and Telemechamic (AT), automated control systems (ACS), robotics, flexible computerized systems and robotics. Students of all specialties studied the theory of automatic control (TAC). An important contribution to methodological and technical support for this course made associate professor, Ph.D. S.V.Shpit. He created a universal laboratory stand (that was shown at exhibitions in Ukraine and Mongolia, adopted for serial production) and electronic textbook.

Diplomas of AT specialty were defended at the Department of DTC by 900 students.

In the 1969/70 academic year, specialty of ACS and was made entrance on 1 class to full time course and special faculty to senior students of other specialties. Yu.P.Zaychenko  assistant professor, Ph.D. delivered the first special course "Operations Research". Further, it was established special discipline by D.Sc V.I.Skuryhin, Ph.D. Yu.P.Zaichenko, S.V.Shpit, V.M.Ihnatenko, V.Ye.Kraskevych, F.M.Kysylevskyi, A.H.Kiku. It was published 4 books. First graduators of ACS (1973) were 23 engineers, and in total until 1978 - almost 1800.

In 1978 from the Department of DTC created department of automatic production of control systems. At that time the Department of DTC firstly in Ukraine started training the engineers on profession "ACS in robotic production". In 1981 was made entrance on the 1 course of the specialty "Robotics". Since 1982 on special faculty were opened specialty of "Mechanics and Control machines - robots and manipulators". As part of the Scientific and Methodological Council under the Ministry of Education USSR, the Department had developed curricula and work programs of major disciplines on several specialties.

Since 1994 the Department provides training professionals in the following areas: intellectual integrated systems, computerized integrated systems and robotics, and from 1997 - Flexible computerized systems and robotics. Teaching new majors were provided by L.S.Yampolskyi, V.M.Ihnatenko, Ye.M.Lytvynov, O.A.Stenin, Yu.I.Kyslenko, A.Y.Savytskyi, S.P.Polyvianyi, V.S.Nedavnii.It was published 8 books. For the first time in Ukraine in 1992 was introduced a new discipline "Artificial Intelligence in the planning and management of production", Textbooks were on Ukrainian and powerful practical research with testing systems (authors - L.S.Yampolskyi, O.A.Lavrov). The publication in 2005 of the complex of three textbooks "Flexible computerized systems: design, modeling and management" (authors: Professor L.S.Yampolskyi, P.P.Melnychuk, B.B.Samotokin, M.M.Polishchuk; associate professor M.M.Tkach, K.B.Ostapchenko, O.I.Lisovychenko) first in Ukraine widely introduced in educational literature a new multimedia technology.

Since 1979 the graduation from the Department of engineers, bachelors and masters degree made more than 4,000 people.

Since 2001 the Department is in the basic training of higher scientific qualification with direction "Automation of control", and in 2001-2007. -  is "A Flexible production systems." For 10 years work of the council were reviewed 17 doctoral theses and 42 master's theses devoted to the problems of modern modeling, verification and optimal process control and creation and implementation of intellectual decision support automation distributed in time and space processes. Over 12 years headed the department of training, licensing and accreditation of higher and secondary technical schools (areas: computer science, mathematics and flexible computer integrated systems) as well as educational and professional development programs. Relevant specialized scientific and expert council headed by professor V.I.Kostyuk (Chairman) and professor L.S.Yampolskyi (Scientific Secretary).

In 70 years at the Department established a scientific school of complex systems modeling and adaptive automatic control systems (Head - V.I.Kostyuk). The research results were used in various fields: automation of chemical plants (V.V.Azhohin, V.D.Romanenko, M.Z.Zhurovskyi, A.Y.Savytskyi, A.P.Movchan), automation of electron beam technology, fault detection welds (F.M. Kysylevskyi) control assembly processes in the instrument (A.A.Krasnoproshyna), optical information processing (A.S.Ostrovskyy) operational control cable manufacture (O.A.Pavlov), adaptive systems identification (A.M.Silvestrov), robotics flexible automated production systems (L.S.Yampolskyy), adaptive management processes and fields (V.Ye.Kraskevych), construction of teaching systems for operators of mobile objects (V.M.Ihnatenko ).

In 1991 on the base created in the 70s two branch organized problem laboratory of Institute of System Technologies (NDIST professor. V.I.Kostiuk). There are wide range of scientific and technical problems were resolved by NDIST (Executors: Yu.A.Tymoshyn, B.V.Ihnatenko, O.A.Stenin, V.H.Halahan) and their customers should be noted:

  • Computerized high school control system, main telecommunication network of educational and scientific institutions, automated training systems, local computer networks for individual universities and ministries;
  • The system of ecological monitoring of the environment - in order SHSU Ukraine;
  • Information-inqury and automated information systems and networks for the State Tax Administration, the National Bank of Ukraine, Ukrzaliznytsia, the State Employment Center, the State Committee on Science and Technology, JSC "Ukrnafta" etc .;
  • Robotic means of flexible manufacturing systems, intellectualized system in the management and planning of production processes, problem-orientedofficial place;
