The Department of renewable energy is one of the youngest one in the University. It will celebrate its first anniversary. 10 years seems to be small. And I want to talk about the role of this Department in the society.

The value of the Department

All civilizations perished, having exhausted their inherent material and energy resources. The basis of modern technical civilization is limitless, not limited by anything plundering and squandering of resources that planet accumulated billions of years. The most critical situation is with fossil energy resources, the time to exhaustion is measured tens, high hundreds of years. If it don`t find a replacement for coal, oil and gas, our civilization, with its extraordinary, amazing achievements will be at imminent risk of extinction, because all achievements are created due to fossil natural energy sources and our ability to produce and use them. For if not to prevent a catastrophe, or at least to reduce its harmful consequences of the mankind, now is the time to develop technologies for the most efficient use of natural renewable energy sources.

The originators

The rector of KPI, Professor, corresponding member of the USSR Academy of Sciences G. I. Denisenko well understood in the 70-ies of the last century under whose leadership, the Institute carried out a large amount of research and design work on integrated use of renewable energy sources. At the first time it was built to test site from renewable energy sources in Ukraine. in In1986 in the CRPD it was opened the first Department of renewable energy sources (RES) in Ukraine by G. I. Denisenko. It was headed by the Professor.M.Kirilenko. And through a number of objective and subjective circumstances that developed after retirement of G. I. Denisenko, the Department was eliminated in 1988.

It took a little time, and, given the results of the monitoring of the labor market and market of educational services for the training of specialists in "non-traditional and renewable energy sources", the Department was restored in December 2002, and it was headed by doctor of Sciences, Professor Stepan Aleksandrovich Kudrya.

The unique composition of the Department

Given the fact that currently in Ukraine and NTUU "KPI" in particular, at the Department  training of specialists for certain types of renewable energy sources being prepared, special attention is paid to the training of specialists in the field of complex use of renewable energy sources, as well as the automation and optimization of operating modes of power plants with renewable energy sources such as offline and the power grid at the Department.

No another University in Ukraine, which trains specialists from unconventional and renewable energy sources, has such powerful and well-qualified teaching staff, able to provide comprehensive training in all areas of traditional and renewable energy, and more importantly, to cultivate professionals with a comprehensive approach to renewable energy. Head of Department doctor of technical Sciences, laureate of State prize of Ukraine Kudrya S. A. is headed by the Interbranch scientific and technical center (ISTC) wind energy and is a Deputy Director on scientific work of Institute for renewable energy (FC) of the NAS of Ukraine. Teachers of the Department are employees of the EVE of the NAS of Ukraine, leading scientists, heads of scientific developments in the field of renewable energy and work on the design and construction of power plants with these sources in Ukraine: Deputy Director corresponding member cor. The national Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor V. F. Incisors, head of Department D. G. M. Zabarny, scientific Secretary Ph. D. T. Surzhik, chief engineer U. P. Favorski, as well as staff members D. E. V. Golovko, D. SC.M. A. J. Gajewski, laureate of the State prize of Ukraine, the first head of the Department candidate of technical Sciences V. M. Kirilenko, Ph.D. I.V.Nowakowski, Ph. D. V. I. Budko, etc.

Our achievements

The Department of renewable energy is not only one of the youngest, but also one of the most hardworking and promising at the University. During the first years of existence, the Department had developed curricula, educational-qualifying characteristics and educational-professional programs of specialists and masters, educational and working programs of disciplines, prepared lectures, which was carried out a three-stage training specialists (bachelors, specialists and masters in "Energy" specialty "alternative and renewable energy sources". Later, the major was transferred to the "Electrical engineering and Electrotechnology". The Department has successfully passed the accreditation of specialists and masters in the IV level of training. In parallel it was organized the training of scientific personnel of higher qualification through postgraduate and doctoral studies. At the Department it was implemented an integrated masters programme – candidates of Sciences (PhD), 6 graduate students are working on their theses.

The Department has modern laboratories and test benches, which are created for funds received from research activities, the Fund development nttu "KPI", technical assistance ISTC wind energy, EVE, NAS of Ukraine; working class PC, networked with Internet access. Laboratory, course work and projects of students of the Department carry out on the basis of laboratory stands the Cathedral in laboratories EVE of NAS of Ukraine, where is created a branch of the Department.

In the process of implementation of scientific-research works at the Department was created a number of facilities for teaching and research stands with the use of renewable energy sources, in particular photoelectron. He moves through the motor, which is powered by batteries, which in turn are charged by the photocells, and at the expense of diesel engine is running on biofuel. Photoelectron is a permanent exhibit of the Science Park of NTUU "KPI" .At the Department it is installed heat pumps, which are involved in the educational process in the laboratory work, at the same time they provide building # 20 hot water. The Department has mentalist that provides illumination in the laboratory.

The Department annually in conjunction with the Institute of renewable energy is holding an International conference on renewable energy "Energy XXI", in which teachers, postgraduates and students of the Department take part. With the participation of teachers and students of the Department have published seven monographs and textbooks, two of them are labeled with MES, more than 200 articles in professional journals, more than 300 abstracts at various conferences, of them nearly 140 with the participation of the students obtained 10 patents. All students in the Department of renewable energy who are studying for the master, at the time of admission to graduate is sure to have publications and presentations at conferences of different levels. Graduates of the Department are in great demand in the labour market and work both at the workplace and in public institutions related to renewable energy sources.

The Department has research links and agreements about student exchange with foreign organizations and universities for the implementation of the graduation projects and works (German center “Solar Zentrum” Maklenburg-Vorpormen and Danish centre “Nordic Folkecenter for Renewable Energy”).

Due to the persistent teaching and research work of faculty and staff, Department of renewable energy is the second consecutive year in the top three at the University. This year, our Department took third place overall and third place by the results of the research and innovation activities.

Future plans

The Department staff is constantly working at a fast pace. While continuing work on providing students with training materials and textbooks from all special subjects, on the stage of completion of the organization of retraining and the provision of services for obtaining the second higher education on renewable energy in the framework of the Unido project. The main task of the Department of renewable energy for the future is to become a common scientific and methodological center for training specialists from renewable energy sources not only in the University but also for other higher educational institutions of Ukraine.
