On January 15, the Federation of Trade Unions of Ukraine and a number of the noncommercial associations held a preventive protest against the adoption of the new Labor Law, which is going to be considered by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine. Representatives of the trade union organization in the KPI also took part in the mass protest. It started on Independence Square, afterward, its participants went to the building on the Bankova street, where there is the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Social Policy and Veterans' Rights. The protesters stressed that the offered edition of Labor Law would worse the rights and guarantees of employees and deprive trade unions of their ability to defend themselves. Speakers pointed to specific threats that could arise in the case that the law would be implemented in Labor Code of Ukraine. These include a significant simplification of employee dismissal procedures and the introduction of a rule under which an employer will have the right to dismiss an employee on his or her own initiative without any clearly defined grounds, a reduction in the number of mandatory days off, the repeal of the current legislation on double pay for weekend work. etc.
