A.Y. Mokrenko was born January22, 1933 in a large rural family in the village of Terni Nedryhailiv district in Sumy. The boy survived the war, occupation, devastation and famine. Obtaining the profession of engineer geologist at the Kiev Polytechnic Institute (1956), during the following eight years he worked in expeditions in the Caucasus, Northern Urals, the Crimea, Carpathians and the South Ukraine. Simultaneously, he studied at the Kiev State Conservatory, which he graduated in 1963 (his teachers were Nikolai Zubarev and Alexandra Grodzinska).
In the years 1968-1996 A. Mokrenko was the soloist of the State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater of USSR of Shevchenko, toured on opera and concert stages several dozen countries, and from 1991 to 1999, he held the post of general director and artistic director of the National Opera of Ukraine.
In his repertoire, there are about 40 leading operatic roles, hundreds of songs and ballads, recordings for radio, television and records. He starred as an actor is several films: "Lucia di Lammermoor", "Tygrolovy", "Black Board", "Post and Princess," "Brotherhood", "Bogdan Khmelnitsky". He is the author of two books and more than a hundred publications of artistic and Ukrainian studies subjects.
He is the holder of the Order of Friendship of Peoples. Yaroslav the Wise, Vladimir the Great and many state awards and honors.
1991-1999 - general director and artistic director of the National Opera of Ukraine.
Today A.Y. Mokrenko is Professor of Kyiv National Musical Academy of P. Tchaikovsky, initiator and chairman of the jury of children's choirs "sing along", which takes place every year in his native Terni.
