Mechanical subdepartment (later – Department of Mechanical Engineering and now - Institute of Mechanical Engineering of NTUU " KPI") dates back to 1898 and together with Chemical Engineering Department is fthe same age as the Kyiv Politechnik.
Due to the shortage of the engineering personnel for the industry south of the Russian Empire the mechanical department was tasked to prepare Mechanical Engineers generalists in metal, foundry, steam engines, internal combustion engines , machines for processing fibers, agricultural machinery, generators and electric motors.

In 1928, there were well-equipped laboratories locomotives, steam engines, hydraulics, lubricants, internal combustion engines, foundry, thermal measurements, agricultural machines and tractors, metal and aviation. By the time the mechanical department KPI gave a happy start in independent life of Electrotechnical Engineering Polytechnic Institute (1918), selecting from among its members the Department of Electrical Engineering. A.V. Krakovskyy (head of the department of electrical engineering ) graduated from mechanical department in 1903 according to the type electro was the first dean of ET.
In the preparation of highly qualified engineers, improve the quality of their education, development of technical skills and initiative important role played by students' scientific and technological project groups. Radtsyh, who was later replaced by prof. V.F.Bobrov and last - prof. M.O.Voropayev . The work group actively involved professors H.D. Dubelir, E.O. Paton and others. The project group has its own charter, under which all of his work was organized. Were selected user group. In November 1906 with the active support of professors and M.B. Delone, M.A. Artemiev was founded project group aeronautics. After flying club of Petersburg, he became the second country airlab . Chairman of the group under the statute was Director of KPI, and the vice-president - a student of mechanical subdepartment V.F. Bobrov. After a year the group was attended by about 200 students and teachers. Project group took in almost all the books and magazines of aeronautics, which were issued that time. The design work started from next year. The members of the group headed by prof. M.B.Delone built gliders . However, most active and highest scoring section was aircraft. Already in 1910, professor O.S.Kudashov firstly flew an airplane of his own design .
In 1909, on the basis of the group founded Kyiv Ballooning Society which was actively supervised by professor of theoretical mechanics mechanical subdepartment MB Delone who was a student of M.Ye. Zhukovskyi. So Kyiv became one of the largest centers of domestic aviation. Only in the years 1909-1912 Kiev enthusiasts have created about 40 different types of aircraft. This creative way of approaching the first risings in 1910 , three years brought Kiev designers led by a student of mechanical branch of KPI - I.I. Sikorskoho to create the world's first aircraft giant " Russian Vytyaz" and " Ilya Muromets ". The project group of Aeronautics KPI later became the basis for the creation of the new Department of Mechanical Department the Faculty of Aviation. Subsequently, in 1931, at the request of the Management Kyiv Aviation Plant in the Kiev independent engineering institute ( established at the engineering department KPI and existed from 1930 to 1934 ) opened Faculty of Aviation. Research and design and technology work in faculty project groups were many sided and resultative. In the early 30 's KPI was reorganized into eight independent institutions, and this division is most influenced the fate of Mechanical Engineering . Formed separate universities: mechanical, energetical, aviative, engineering of construction, engineers of railway and water transport, light industry, food industry, Chemical Engineering. On the basis of the mechanical department was created Kyiv Engineering Institute. It is composed of the remaining agricultural engineering department and specialty «Aircraft ", which later became the basis (as described above) to create a NAU. Thus on the basis of the mechanical department, in addition to building institute were created: flour in a food specialty Institute (now - National University of Food Technologies), main specialty Textile Institute (now - Kyiv National University of Technologies and Design). 'Thermal Installation " turned into heat power engineering faculty of KPI.
In June 1934 government decree Engineering, Energetical and Chemical Engineering institutes were re- united in the Kiev Industrial Institute of P.P.Postyshev. Mechanical Engineering Department has gained technological bias in metalworking and future engineers obtained fundamental training in physics and mathematics and general engineering.
In 1935, the mechanical department KPI due to the initiative of the outstanding scientist and a mechanical engineer and bridge builders Academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Hero of Socialist Labor Department E. O. Paton was founded and started training of mechanical engineers in «Equipment and technology of welding " . Through the transfer of students from other academic majors formed the group with welding on students of 2 and 3 year and already in 1938 the first issue of Mechanical Engineers in this field.
During the period of existence in the mechanical and Mechanical Engineering Department mentioned above trained over 2 thousand specialists in welding, many of its graduates have become prominent figures of science and welding. Among the graduates more than 220 candidates and 36 PhD, known NAS of Ukraine B.I.Medovar, I.K.Pohodnya, S.I.Kuchuk-Yatsenko , K.A. Yushchenko, G.M. Grigorenko and many prominent business leaders and organizations, the major specialists.
In 1938, in order to reduce and simplify the Faculty of Management of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Department was removed hydraulics, steam boilers, chemical engineering and foundry. Subsequently, the Department of foundry returned again to the Mechanical Department. In the 1940-1941 academic year opened a specialty " vehicles and road transport " ( specialist training in this specialty was discontinued in KPI in 1955). Lectures on Mathematics in the MMI read world-renowned scientist and academician Prof M.P. Kravchuk, O.S. Smohorzhevskiy, Chemistry - prof. V.O. Izbekov from theoretical mechanics - prof. But in the summer of 1941 training and work were interrupted by the war.
After re-evacuation from Tashkent to Kyiv classes in the KPI began in the winter of 1944. The same year the Institute was returned to its historic name " Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", and the mechanical department , headed by Dean V.L.Sahnenko then – by I.P.Trochun started to work .
In the postwar years, Mechanical Department opened a whole new profession, gave a pass to the new faculty. Thus, in the autumn of 1944, the Department of foundry (Head of Department was prof. K.I.Vaschenko ) creates a metallurgical department with a number of new specialties for KPI ( Domain, steelmaking, etc.). . In 1948-1955 he was in a separate section formed specialty welding, the mechanical department instituted training mechanical engineers in specialty “engineer –teacher” - future teachers institutes, colleges and vocational schools.
In 1954, the academic group at the Chemical Engineering Department of profiling mechanical department was transferred to a separate Department of Chemical Engineering, which was recovered in connection with the accession to the KPI Kiev Technological Institute of silicates where were related specialty.
In 1959 the faculty began training engineers in the field of instrumentation. Profiling the future of the department faculty created at the Department of Mechanical Faculty, which was returned to its previous name “Mechanics and Engineering”. Meanwhile, happened strengthening of traditional specialties. Thus, in 1950, specialty "Mechanical Engineering" identified specialization “cutting tools”, although a separate department was opened only in 1969 then in 1950 it doubled the taking for the specialty "Machines and technology of metal forming.”
The rapid development of instrument-making factory in Kiev demanding a sharp increase in relevant engineering personnel for the machine-building industry in Ukraine. In response to this need, MMI gave a happy start in independent life is a regular department KPI. In 1962 was established instrument department, which was the first dean of graduate mechanical department in 1949 Professor O.D. Trubenok . Simultaneously, he headed the Department of Precision Mechanics.
In 1964, the development of industrial production led to the launching of MMI mechanical engineers in specialty "Hidroautomatics and hydraulic drive."
Advanced scientific schools of MMI
For being a professor and the first dean of the mechanical department was invited professor Konstantin Zvorykin, who worked at the Kharkov Institute of Technology. In 1901 he served as academic dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and in 1904-1905 he was the director of the KPI. Professor K.O.Zvorykin played a significant role in the creation and development of mechanical faculty and the entire institutions.
The first set of students in the mechanical department KPI was 109 people.

P. Tymoshenk - with the strength of materials and elasticity ; M.B. Delone - from aviation, K.K. Syminskyi - the theory of fatigue and strength of materials , E.O. Paton - with bridge , K.H. Shyndler - of Agricultural Engineering, M.A. Artemyev – from electric cars, and V.P. Yermakov M.P.Kravchuk - mathematics and others. Scientific Schools of KPI and mechanical department rose to the level of world science. However, many scientists were able to take a long academic training in advanced research centers in Europe and America.
In the educational process KPI Administration paid much attention to the development of education model of an engineer. From the outset of training engineer frames at Kiev Polytechnic was founded educational model of European technical universities (including the Paris Higher Polytechnic School, Aachen and Vienna University of Technology ). This model included the organic combination of deep fundamental natural science training in mathematics, physics, chemistry, mechanics and other subjects of general engineering and acquisition of practical skills of future specialty in manufacturing and in scientific institutions. This model of training engineers was crucial for KPI and a centuries of experienced training for engineering complex fully confirmed its viability and sustainability.
Profound basic and general engineering knowledge gives young specialist wider scientific and technical vision and least of "aging" in our rapidly changing of progressively technicalized world. They are more competitive and provide more opportunities in the international market of engineering work to elect and related specialties.
The first issue was on the faculty of engineering in 1903 with 109 people who entered the first year in 1898, diplomas were only 10 studying .
Graduates of the mechanical department had good knowledge and necessary derivatives practice. At the initiative of academician H.S.Pysarenko from 1970 to MMI for the purposes primarily academic institutions of USSR ( Problems of Strength , Hard Materials of M.V.Bakulya, Welding Institute of E.O. Paton and others. ) began training mechanical engineers and researchers in "Dynamics and strength of Machines ". Experts of this specialty have profound physical and mathematical training at the Mechanics and Mathematics Faculty traditional universities, with modern methods of analysis, the calculation of the stress- strain state and the carrying capacity of structural elements responsible for different purposes in complex thermal power loads. Today, called specialty trained 1,200 professionals, including 21 graduate doctorates, and more than 130 - candidates. It should be said that the Kyiv School of durability has worldwide recognition. Obeisance to the founders of this school V.L.Kyrpychov and S.P.Tymoshenko who in the U.S. is called the great mechanic of the twentieth century. Stephen Prokopovych was one of the founders in 1918 of the NAS of Ukraine, organizer and first director of the Institute of Mechanics of NAS of Ukraine, which now bears his name. In his more than 90 books on strength of materials, theory of elasticity and the theory of stability enrolled students today almost all mechanical engineering universities in the world. In the U.S. S.P.Tymoshenko became the central figure in the training of scientists and engineers. Built them in the Americas Research School raised this destination knowledge hitherto unprecedented heights. Scientific School of V.L.Kyrpychov, S.P.Tymoshenko and later on MMI entered its heyday in the academic achievements of its graduates from different years, academics USSR K.K.Syminskyi , M.M.Davydenkov , F.P.Belyankin, S. In 1977 , the Department of Theoretical Mechanics MMI was headed by Professor M.A.Pavlovskyy . Since his arrival in the department staff a new scientific direction - the applied theory of gyroscopes and nonlinear oscillations. The development of this area has led to the creation in 1989 of the scientific scientific Institute for Problems in Mechanics "Rhythm". And, as has become traditional in Mechanical Engineering, he again made a start in independent life new structural division "KPI" . In 1993 he established a new faculty of aerospace systems, which became the basis for the Department of Theoretical Mechanics Institute and "Rhythm." The first dean of Faculty of Aircraft and Space Systems D.Eng.Sc., prof. M.A.Pavlovskyy graduated from MMI.
The tradition of creating new scientific and educational schools, which originated at the base and the development of mechanics and mechanical-engineering, maintained , and will be supported in the future. MMI is proud of academic schools H.S.Pysarenka academician of the USSR , member - correspondent of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR P.R.Rodina, Professor M.S.Mozharovskoho and achievements of leading scholars and outstanding teachers. Mechanical Engineering in 1997 is the base for scientific-methodical commission of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine in the field of knowledge " Oil and material working ." In 1999, the State Committee of Ukraine on the basis of Mechanical Engineering Institute "KPI" created agency of certification metalworking and woodworking equipment and engineering products.
