Olexander Mikulin (02 [14] .02.1895, Vladimir - 13.05.1985, Moscow, USSR) - a prominent designer of aircraft engines, Hero of Socialist Labor (1940), Academician of the USSR Academy of Sciences (1943), Major General Engineer (1944) , winner of the State Prize of the USSR, Student KPI in 1912-1914.
Under the leadership O.O. Mikulin the Institute of Aviation Motors created a powerful aircraft engine M-34, which is installed on bombers A.M.Tupolev design. These engines were fitted to Tupolev ANT-25, which V.P.Chkalov and then M.M.Gromov in 1937 used to perform very long flights across the North Pole.
O.O. Mikulin with his DB developed AM-38 engine with power 1600 hp. Famous during World War II (it was called the flying tank - in the photo below) Ilyushin Il-2 was equipped with this engine.
After the war, O.O. Mikulin and his designers’ team developed a jet engine AM-3 for the strategic bomber Tu-16 with a record thrust 8750 kg. The world's first passenger jet airliner Tu-104 was created later on the base of this engine and this aircraft.
