Vitaliy Borysovych Maksymenko – Doctor of Medical Science, professor. Honored academic figure of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine, MD, professor, graduated from Bohomolets National Medical Institute in 1975. He is Acad. Amosov’s disciple and follower.
Since 2009 Vitaliy Maksymenko is the Acting Dean of Intercollegiate Medical Engineering National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" (now the Department of Biomedical Engineering), FBMI Dean.
Vitaliy Borysovych started his career in 1975 as office research assistant of acquired heart defects department in the clinic of cardiovascular surgery of Kiev Institute of Tuberculosis and Thoracic Surgery n. a. F.G. Yanovsky of Ministry of Health of Ukraine (at present - Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery n. a. M.M. Amosov AMS of Ukraine). From 1977 to 1983 he worked as the anesthesiologist in the X-ray surgery research methods laboratory; 1983-1983 he was the Head of the Laboratory of artificial blood circulation; 1983-1985 Maksymenko worked as the Senior Fellow resuscitation and intensive care; 1985-1993 he was the Head of scientific laboratory cardiopulmonary bypass; in 1993 Vitaliy Borysovych became the Deputy Director of Research Institute of Cardiovascular Surgery n. a. M.M. Amosov AMS of Ukraine. He holds this post at present. V.B.Maksymenko is directly responsible for the implementation of scientific projects of the Institute of Cardiovascular surgery n. a. M.M. Amosov AMS of Ukraine, including scientific research in areas of theoretical and applied medicine in the diagnostics, prevention and treatment of acquired and congenital heart diseases, cardio anesthesiology, intensive care, cardiopulmonary bypass, biomedical engineering and cybernetics.
Since 1975 he has worked on the problems of artificial circulation. Also Maksyment has been engaged in the development and implementation of related technologies, led by Acad. Amosov.
Since 1977 he has actually led the laboratory artificial circulation. The scientist has personally performed more than 3.5 thousand cardiopulmonary bypass procedures with complete temporary replacement of functions of the heart and lungs during surgery for congenital, acquired defects and coronary heart disease.
Since 1991 he has been a member of the International Scientific Organizing Committee of the European Congress Fund on technology of artificial blood (the scientist took part in organizing and conducting of 13 European conferences involving Ukraine). He was president of the 12th European Congress of cardiopulmonary bypass technology, organized and conducted by him in Ukraine in 2007.
Since 1993 Maksymenko has been the head of the scientific committee of the annual conferences of the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Ukraine.
Since 1994 he has been working in a system of medical equipment quality control of Ministry of Health of Ukraine. At present he is a member of the State Department, which monitors the quality, safety and production of drugs and medical devices.
Since 1996 he holds the post of the Chairman of the problem commission Ministry of Health and Medical Sciences of Ukraine in "Surgical treatment of heart and blood vessels," a member of the Association of Cardiovascular Surgeons of Ukraine and the Russian Association of extracorporeal technology.
Since 1999 Maksymenko is a Member of the Committee on Bioethics of the Presidium of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine.
In 2002 he was awarded by the American Academy of cardiac surgery perfusionists as a specialist, who had made a personal contribution to the development of world-class artificial circulation by the end of 2001
In 2004 Maksymenko founded and headed the first in Ukraine Department of Biomedical Engineering of Intercollegiate Medical Engineering Faculty in National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute".
In 2005 he was awarded the diploma of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.In 2005 was awarded the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology.
In the 2007 he was the prizewinner of the International Academic Rating of Ukraine "Golden Fortune". He was awarded the medal of St. George 4th class.
In 2008 the scientist was awarded the title of Honored Worker of Science of Ukraine.
In 2009 he was elected a member of the editorial board of the Czech Technical University journal «Acta Polytechnica» in Prague.
The scientist has 167 published works (including 29 overseas), 3 monographs, 6 patents for inventions.
