Lev Hasanovych Hasanov was a scientist, professor, head of science and engineering school of microwave electronics. He would have turned 80 years old on April 28, 2016. He passed a bright way of life. In this way he completely gave himself to the work in which he boundlessly believed and did it devotedly, professionally and at the highest level.
His merits before ukrainian science are not forgotten! He is the eminent scientist in the field of high frequency electronics and radio physics, professor, doctor of technical sciences, corresponding member of National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine and the Soviet Union in science and technology, founder of the national school of creation of a broad class of devices and systems micropower electronics, the author of many scientific works and inventions. L.H. Hasanov graduated from Kyiv Polytechnic Institute in 1959. Initially he worked in the Research Institute "Orion" (c. Kyiv), and from May 1974 he was appointed director of the Research Institute "Saturn" that he directed by December 1991.
An opportunity to create transceiver amplifier systems with moderate cooling and temperature control of basic units of noise parameters greater than during deep cooling, but sufficient for many radio electronic complexes appeared in 1974 due to advances in production technology of gallium arsenide semiconductors of microwave devices.
Since 1977 the development of gallium arsenide-transistor of microwave amplifiers began in the Institute "Saturn" which in the future helped to refuse the use of parametric amplifiers. The initiator of this strong but risky step was L.H. Hasanov who was able to solve the problem of inclusion of the first work following the developments of receiving and amplifying systems with thermostatic or moderate cooling basic units to the topical draft of ROC "Use".
These systems compared to krielectronical made it possible to significantly improve the weight and size characteristics, enhance operational reliability, decrease costs and expand the scope of application: as in unique radio astronomy complexes Ratan-600, PT-70, and in a wide range of receiving stations for satellite television in polar remote villages on the frontier and in the Soviet institutions and military units abroad.
Works of Research Institute "Saturn" didn’t remain without attention of many prominent scientists of the country, the higher command of the army and KGB, party and government leaders. During the years Research Institute "Saturn" was visited by academician of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, laureate of Lenin and Nobel Prizes A.M.Prohorov, academician of the ASUSSR, the President of ASUSSR, the winner of Lenin Prize Boris Paton, academician of the ASUSSR, laureate of Lenin Prize M. D. Dev'yatkov, academicians of the ASUSSR B.M.Vul, Zh.I.Alforov, U.V.Hulyayev, R.Z.Sahdeyev, corresponding member of the ASUSSR V.I.Syforov, academicians of the ASUSSR V.P. Shestopalov, H.S.Pysarenko, V.M. Glushkov, V.H.Bar'yahtar, Marshal of military communication A.I.Byelov, Colonel General N.P.Yemahonov, lieutenant General O.O.Myltsev and K.I.Kobets, Soviet cosmonaut B.V.Volynov, heads of ministries, research institutes and industrial enterprises.
It is appropriate to say that V. I. Sydorov – the author of the classic textbook on radio receivers in 50 years claimed that the noise temperature of radio receiver unit can be lower than the natural (surrounding) temperature. Under the influence of the work of "Saturn" taking into account technological advances of microelectronics V.I. Sydorov changed his mind on this issue.
During the period from 1975 to 1980 100 new types of electronic products were created, 20 governmental tasks of development and industrial production of new products with parameters that correspond to foreign level or exceed it in some cases were performed.
In 1977 an experimental model of equipment "Electronics-connection" for a new generation of trunk radio relay lines (RRL) connection was developed on the basis of the latest achievements in science and technology in dielectronics over the plan, for 8 months, "the first time on Borshchagivka" as L.H. Hasanov was joking. Dimensions, weight, power consumption of the equipment was about 50 times less than similar parameters of contemporary equipment "Svitanok". This work gave the rise to the development of new direction in operation of advanced equipment RRL.
In 1976-1980 products for medical use, a number of consumer goods, distant measure of vehicles speed, products for agriculture, including biothermostats for use in artificial insemination of cattle were developed. The creation of building technical areas, special technological laboratories, energy facilities required for mass production of products and manufacturing prototypes was mostly finished by 1980 at the Research Institute and at the factory in Kyiv. All scientific and technical, production work in the Institute "Saturn" led by L.H. Hasanov was done to solve two major problems: proactive development scientific and technical direction enshrined in the enterprise compared to the foreign level and reducing the cycle "science-production".
L.H. Hasanov paid special attention to the education of young scientists and engineers. He did not fear to entrust the implementation of difficult and almost hopeless work for young professionals while sometimes spoke in private: "They are so young and do not know that it is impossible to get such parameters, so they get them." The obsession with work, creative approach to the task created ironic at first, and then the friendly epithet "Saturnovati" for workers of "Saturn".
On the initiative of L.H. Hasanov and the full support of the leadership of KPI the clear system for preparation of KPI students for work in "Saturn" was produced. The scheme was the following: practical training - pre-diploma practice - the protection of the degree project - employment in the Institute "Saturn". Particularly close contact in the scientific and educational work was with the Faculty of Electronics KPI, the dean of which at the time was professor U.I.Yakymenko. By 1985 the team of the company won strong authority in the country. The products of Research Institute "Saturn" determined in many cases the scientific and technical level and combat capability of the most important military facilities: "Zirka", "Korund", "Crystal", "Zlyva", systems of distant space communications in projects "Venera-15" "Venera-16", "Vega" satellite TV systems "Moscow", tank radar in the frequency range 94 GHz low noise transceiver amplification system "Erythrite" in the frequency band 59-64 GHz for satellite communications, unique airborne radiometric set in the frequency range 22-118 GHz and more. This is the evidence of the correctness of the chosen direction and high potential of the company.
As soon as possible the so-called "pure module ' was built as firstborn of future technological complex with its own material research base for growing gallium arsenide structures by molecular beam and hybrid epitaxy (MLE and ISO). In 1979 L.H. Hasanov became the laureate of the State Prize of the USSR in science and technology for a range of works on creation of new radio systems, and in 1984 the laureate of the State Prize of Ukraine in Science and Technology development of physical and technological bases of improving the quality and reliability of semiconductor microwave devices.
At the meeting of the Presidium of the USSR 09/06/89 p. the joint report of Ph.D. A.V. Palagin (Institute of Cybernetics of the USSR) and Ph.D. L.G. Hasanov (NPO "Saturn") "Highly productive, intelligent computer system with active switching environment" was considered. It was in proposed to deploy the creation of supercomputers with a capacity of 1 billion operations per second which at that time seemed a fantasy. It was the original revolutionary idea of a multiprocessing computer system with wireless radio communication between processors based on microwave radio with extra wide (5000 MHz) band. The general director of NPO "Saturn" prof. L.H. Hasanov in 1989 was elected a corresponding member of the USSR for the large contribution to the development of Soviet science.
L.H. Hasanov until the last days of his life (02.27.2002) was a professor at the Faculty of Electronics, National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", the member of the editorial board of the journal "Electronics and Communications". List of scientific works of L. H. Hasanov contains more than 300 works, five of which are the fundamental monographs of microwave low noise devices and telecommunication systems. Professor L.H. Hasanov differed with wide range of scientific and technological interests and erudition, he was awarded the title "Honorary radio operator". The work started by professor L.H. Hasanov are successfully continued by many groups. His students develop such directions as the theory and development of low-noise microwave devices; development and manufacture of microwave equipment; research and development of effective satellite communications, radio astronomy, radar and medicine; research and development of new microwave telecommunication systems on the basis of micropower electronics and dielectronics using nanotechnology advances. Those people who worked with L.H. Hasanov, talked with him in scientific and industrial field, listened to his vivid performances that left no one indifferent – all of them speak of him with admiration. They mention his scientific works that have won worldwide recognition, filled with special emotional warmth of his communication with many students, his kindness, optimism and faith in the future of microwave electronics and even his willingness to share advice, ideas and experience.
There are a lot of great scientists in the world. During the life L. H. Hasanov won the honorary title – Man. We will always miss him. We ask themselves in difficult moments: "What our unforgettable Lev Hasanovych would say, would do, what would advise us – the Man with a capital letter."
