September 2005 has become a 100 anniversary from the birthday from the date of a birth of prof. Shalvy Georgiyovicha Gordeladze (director of mathematical physics department 1967-1973, worked in KPI 1944-1973).
On October 26 at the solemn meeting of the department of mathematical analysis and the theory of probability, devoted to 100-year-old anniversary of Sh. G. Gordeladze, were present department employees of the faculty, colleagues from the Main Astronomical Observatory, students, honorary guests and relatives. Guests listened to interesting memoirs about the outstanding scientist, talented teacher and the wonderful Person. With warm words and their own reminiscence spoke at a meeting prof. N. O. Virchenko, prof. of V.V. Buldygin (Department Chairman), senior lecturer O.G. Bilyi, V.P. Bruiakin (son), prof. V.O. Dobrovolskyi, prof. N.N. Kukharchuk, A.O. Korsun, V.I. Voroshilov (colleagues from MAO), docent Z.P. Ordynska, docent B.I. Dzira, senior lecturer E.O. Kostetskyi, V.G. Bila and others. Energy, diligence, talent, honesty and lots of other virtues of this person, the soldier, the known scientist, the talented organizer, and the teacher would be sufficient enough to many people.
Shalva Georgiyovich Gordeladze was born in Georgian village Guryanta in a family of the peasant on September 18, 1905. After graduation from humanitarian technical college in Makharadze (1922) he had been taught mathematics and dreamt about higher education. At Tbilisi University he started to listen to lectures as the free listener at the Faculty of Philosophy, but the death of father forced him to interrupt study and to search for work. He worked as the accountant, ticket collector, inspector in people's commissariat of labor in Georgia, without leaving hopes for further study. Only in 1927 he entered the physical and mathematical faculty of Tbilisi University. After successful graduation from the university he worked as the research assistant in Tbilisi institute of applied chemistry, but he was uncontrollably attracted by astronomical researches.
In 1934 he entered to postgraduate studies by the speciality "Astronomy" under the Leningrad University to the well-known astrophysics V.A. Ambartsumian. Together with Ambartsumian Gordeladze performed the works devoted to the important problems of dark and the diffusive nebula in Galactic. Results of these researches and their technique gained wide recognition of astronomers from all over the world and became a part of textbooks from the sidereal astronomy. In 1937 work of Gordeladze "Research of Some questions connected with the phenomenon of flash" which was awarded the State Stalin Prize of USSR for the best scientific works of young scientists. The same year he successfully defending the Ph.D. thesis, which the Academic council of the Leningrad University, at accomplishment of the certain organizational moments, recommended to observe as the thesis for a doctor's degree.
Studying in the postgraduate studies, Gordeladze took active part in construction and formation of a new Abastumanskoi observatory, worked as the deputy director, the senior research assistant. Thus, he, vigorous scientist enamored of astronomy, was also attracted by the pedagogical work. In 1939-1940 he, combined jobs and worked as the senior lecturer at Tbilisi University - lectured the general and theoretical astrophysics. And this desire to teach, communicate with youth, he carried through all his life.
In 1940, by the invitation of the Kiev University, Gordeladze moved to Kiev to work in the Astronomical observatory of Kyiv State University as the deputy director of scientific work. At the same time he started to read a course of lectures on theoretical astrophysics and spectroscopy for students of senior years of university. It was the period of the organization and formation of the department of optics in KSU, to which Gordeladze joined.
He did not stop the scientific researches, which results were published in many known scientific magazines of the country and abroad.
In 1941 war crossed out all. As the senior lecturer of university, Gordeladze could evacuate, but as the true patriot he went as a volunteer to the front, where he was enlisted as the military topographer of an artillery regiment. Participated in battles under Yablunivka, Stezhintsi, Kanev. In September, 1941 near to the village Mali Kruchi at Piryatyn his division got into encircling. When trying to get out of encircling through the marshes, together with other soldiers, wounded men, contused, he was taken prisoner. Further - a prisoner-of-war camp, forced labor, a serious illness (typhus). When he slightly recovered, with help of members of an underground organization, ran from camp to guerrillas together with whom he continued to struggle against fascist aggressors on Kirovogradshchina until reunion of guerrilla group with parts of Red Army at the end of 1943. Since then he has participated in releasing the cities of Znamianka and Kirovograd, for what he was awarded with two medals "Military Merit Medal". After invalided out of the army in 1944, he was directed for pedagogical work on calculus department of the Kiev polytechnic institute with which he connected his life forever. At that time, near Kiev began the construction of the Main astronomical observatory (MAO Academy of Sciences USSR) where he was invited to work (in combination) as the deputy director. Within 16 years he combined pedagogical work in KPI with successful scientific work in MAO, taking active part both in construction, and in formation of this young scientific institution. That is when were useful his experience of construction of the Abastumanskaia observatory and the organisation of research work. Then Gordeladze worked as the scientific secretary, head of the department of astrophysics, deputy director of scientific work. For successful creative work he was more than once awarded: in 1945 an “Order of the Red Banner of Labor", in 1946. The reward of Presidium of Academy of Sciences USSR, in 1961. - a medal "For Labor Valour" and others. Scientific achievements and the mathematical methods developed by him for definition of weight of novae and their tegument, researches of interstellar absorption of light and features of a spatial allocation of a dust matter and stars of various spectral classes for studying location and structure of spiral armlet of Galactic, works on physics of planets of Solar system, were highly appreciated by astrophysicists and specialists on mathematical physics. In 1962, together with his students and colleagues, he published fundamental work "The catalogue photographic, photovisual and photored magnitudes of 22000 stars" which were recognized as one of the most exact catalogues of this kind. In 1960 Gordeladze completely switched to scientific and pedagogical work in KPI.
In 1963, he brilliantly defended the dissertation "Research of Some characteristics of stars and a diffusive matter" on competition of a scientific degree of Ph.D. of physical and mathematical sciences. From 1963 Gordeladze - the professor of mathematical physics department in KPI, and from 1967 - the head of this department.
From 1967 and for the rest his life prof. Gordeladze skilfully directed the work of mathematical physics department. For this period considerably grew the department’s quantitative complement, the department joined young talented teachers, increased the spectrum of directions of scientific work. Along with other seminars, the scientific seminar on astrophysics started to work on department under the direction of Gordeladze. Young scientists, students of Shalvy Georgiyovicha, with calmed breath, listened to his thorough lectures, scientific reports, themselves switched to scientific search. Appeared printing works on astrophysics, reports at seminars, conferences.
Gordeladze was a remarkable popularizer of a science about the Universe. To his more than 120 scientific works it possible to add numerous popular scientific publications in magazines, newspapers, public statements, and the popular scientific book "Planet Neptune" from publishing house "Znannia” gained especially approving comments. Gordeladze was also the associate editor of many scientific and popular scientific magazines, the head or a member of the special commissions at Academy of Sciences USSR, worked in Astronomical committee Organizing Committee of the International geophysical year and others. He was the chairman of the subject commission on mathematics of a admission board of KPI, actively and fruitfully was engaged in methodical work. Together with F.P. Yaremchuk and N.N. Kukharchuk he wrote "The collection of competition sums on mathematics", which did not lose the urgency and today. And everywhere he carried out all work up to the mark, for what he repeatedly was gaining the state awards, thanks, charters of KPI, Ministry of Higher Education of USSR. He was awarded with a badge "For excellent successes in work in the field of the higher education in the USSR" and others.
At work of Sh.G. Gordeladze did not feel sorry for himself. On January 25, 1973, his heart did not endure and he died right on a work place in the building № 12 during consultation for the students before examination.
Gordeladze Shalva Georgiyovich was buried at Baikove Cemetery. Blessed memory about him is living in us, in souls of his friends, students, colleagues, and employees of institute. Everybody loved him...
