On this day, August 6, 1930, Viktor Ivanovych Trefilov was born. He was a graduate and Honorary Doctor of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, director of the Institute of Materials Science Problems from 1973 to 2001.
In 1952, he graduated from the Metallurgical Faculty of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute, the department of metallurgy, heat treatment and metal physics, successfully.
Trefilov was one of the initiators and organizers of the Educational and Scientific Association on the basis of the Kyiv Polytechnic Institute and the Institute of Materials Science Problems of the National Academy of Sciences. It included 26 departments of the Institute of Materials Science Problems and 4 departments of the Faculty of Engineering and Physics of Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. This made it possible to use the most modern laboratory base of the National Academy, to involve leading Ukrainian scientists in the educational process and joint scientific work.
Viktor Ivanovych deserved full credit for developing the physical base of the theory of strength and plasticity of artificial and natural materials for various purposes. His research laid significant groundwork for the production engineering of extra high tensile steel armor development.
