Today we honour one of the most outstanding graduates of Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute. On this day in 1908, Arkhip Lyulka was born. General designer of aircraft engines. In 1941, for the first time in the world, Lyulka proposed a scheme of a twin-circuit turbojet engine, which is the basic scheme of modern turbojet engines.
Later, the design bureau of Arkhip Lyulka will create several dozen more types of turbojets. Aircraft with his engines set more than 50 world records. Modified AL-31, development of which began in 1973, still remains the best engine for high-manoeuvrable fighters.
A monument to Arkhip Mikhailovich Lyulka was erected behind the main building of the Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute on the Alley of Outstanding Scientists and Designers.
