On September 13th, in the Hall of the Council of NTUU " KPI" a lecture dedicated to finding the balance of interests in the issues of distributing pirated intellectual product and people's rights to free access to information was presented by a well-known researcher in the field of Information Society , Innovation and Network Security Richard Bennett ( USA). The lecture was organized with the assistance of the U.S. Embassy in Ukraine .
Richard Bennett has thirty years of experience in computer engineering and standards. Served as consultant government and U.S. state legislatures and the European Commission on the use of modern information and communication technologies and legal problems of information networks. He is the author of numerous articles and chapters in books on relevant issues. So lesson was for the Kiev Polytechnic particularly interesting , especially in view of the experience of Richard Bennett , and secondly, due to the fact that in our country the issue is extremely important.
The lecture by Richard Bennett called " Piracy and the Three Bears " , winning the title in the American version of the children's tale about a little girl who came to the hut , where the bears lived. In our tale Masha was looking for a chair, a bowl and a crib of her size , American Mary was looking for a pot of porridge. One was very hot and eating from it was impossible , in the second there was a cold porridge which was tasteless , and only in the third one the girl found what she expected. Therefore, the balance of interests between holders - the third pot of porridge which would be tasty for everyone. Searching for this kind of balance is needed: in many countries, society's views on the question of free online access to intellectual products now divided - some believe that the law against the illegal distribution and use must be very hard , others - that it will limit freedom of speech and the right of people to details. By the way, said Richard Bennett, bills to establish stricter rules for violating the rights of owners of intellectual property in the United States has developed , but so far they only warmly discussed by different groups of intellectuals and lawyers.
However, the piracy has a negative impact on the activities of professional artists for whom creation and dissemination of works of art is the main type of income. In any country, it also hinders the work of local entities of intellectual activity , as foreign products of the same destination is accessible. And, of course , it hinders the development of technology because it uses the fruits of the labor of others for free.
One way of reconciling the interests of owners of intellectual property and those who wish to use it, is, according to Richard Bennett , an Internet-resources that offered a content license for a small fee . These companies are already operating successfully in the United States , and not only at an affordable price disseminate works of art that are purchased license, but also create their own .
The problems mentioned by the guest from the U.S., and suggested ways to overcome them are quite interesting for the audience (the audience included students of several schools that in the near future will become experts in protection of intellectual property in the fields of information technology and computer engineering ) so after the lecture meeting continued in the form of questions and answers.
