April 22, 2013 National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute" was visited by President of Winnipeg University (Canada), Professor Lloyd Axworthy. The visitor from Canada discussed with the KPI authorities the prospects of large-scale cooperation between the two universities on the project "Sustainable Campus" with the financial support of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and signed a framework agreement on cooperation between NTUU "KPI" and the University of Winnipeg.
The reached agreements include not only the partnership in the environmental programs that are primarily directed at any sustainable development projects, but also for establishing academic exchange between universities, organizing and carrying out joint scientific events, preparing for the introduction of the "Double Degree" and others. Moreover, the University of Winnipeg has provided researchers of NTUU "KPI" with the right and access codes to their information resources.
The next event in the framework of Professor Lloyd Axworthy visiting in the KPI was his participation in a ceremonial meeting of the Academic Council of the University, during which the Rector of the University National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Mykhailo Zgurovsky awarded him with Diploma of Honorary Doctor of the National Technical University of Ukraine "Kyiv Polytechnic Institute", a gown and a commemorative badge.
The ceremony was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Canada in Ukraine Troy Lulashnik, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ukraine in Canada in 2000-2003 Iurii Shcherbak, and others.
After being awarded Professor Axworthy delivered the lecture on “Sustainable development of the university” to the KPI academic staff, undergraduate and postgraduate students, which was dedicated to the experience of the University of Winnipeg for the development of life-support systems of the campus, based on the use of energy-efficient and "green" technologies. These technologies can significantly reduce the amount of energy consumption and reduce the amount of harmful emissions into the atmosphere.
It should be noted that the idea of "sustainable development" is transparent of the life organization at the University of Winnipeg. This applies to issues of heat and water, energy waste, disposal and the like. Moreover - even the way of movement of his students, 88% of whom, according to Lloyd's Axworthy, get to their place of study by bike only! Therefore, the Canadian experience of "sustainable campus" is, of course, an extremely interesting and valuable not only for the KPI.
