On March, 28 NTUU “KPI” was visited by the founder and the head of the International forum “Science and technologies in community” («Science and Technology in Society forum», in brief «STS forum») Kodzi Omi and Extraordinary and Authorized Ambassador of Japan in Ukraine Sakata Toichi. They were accompanied by a secretary of the head of the Forum Shuichi Facuda, a second secretary of embassy of Japan in Ukraine Keyichi Sasaki and the representatives of the Embassy.
At the meeting with NTUU “KPI” chancellor and academician of NAS of Ukraine Michailo Zgurovsky and administration of the university Kodzi Omi told about tasks which the members of Council Forum set for themselves and about his occupation. While determining its priorities the heads of “STS forum” come to conclusion that nowadays, with speeding-up development of science and technologies and with shortening the terms of bringing them to life, humanity is tête-a-tête collide with new problems about which no one has ever thought about. The questions about global warming, terrorism rising, threats of arising unknown illnesses connected with using newest biotechnologies, exhaustion of traditional sources of energy and many other threats which make humanity to care about self-preservation and creating conditions of its safe existence. Of course, the possibility that science provides people should use, but also to maintain control of the risks that arise in this case. In the fundamental concepts of the Forum this position succinctly articulated in the formula "light and shadow science and technology."
Therefore, the activity of «STS forum» dedicated to the issues of harmonization of these two components. In its conclusions and recommendations ignores a growing number of people who hold leadership positions in science, politics, business and media. In particular, the last has its ninth annual meeting held in 2012, brought together representatives of 96 countries, regions and international organizations, as stated in the first paragraph Applications Forum "... met to reflect on how increase the "light" and control the "shadow" of science and technology and promote innovation to solve our common problems. "
NTUU "KPI" rector Michailo Zgurovsky told the guests that the issue of systematic analysis of socio-economic development, environmental and integrated assessment of global risks is an important focus of university scientists. They are based on the use of materials of the World Data Center for Geoinformatics and Sustainable Development (WDC-Ukraine), which is a part of World Data System International Council of Science and operates within the structure of Educational and Scientific Complex "Institute of Applied System Analysis" NTU "KPI". This study cover a wide range of challenges facing our world today, and their results are very important for solving sustainable development of individual countries and entire regions of the planet.
Participants of the meeting also discussed the prospects of nuclear power engineering especially urgent for Japan and Ukraine with their experience of overcoming the consequences of nuclear holocausts and possible solutions of energy problems in the future.
Finally, the head of the International Forum “Science and technologies in society” Kodzi Omi invited the rector of the university Michilo Zgurovsky to participate in the tenth anniversary meeting of the Forum which is to be held in Kyoto (Japan) in October this year.
